This from the UK Parliament website suggests it could be so delayed, and the position would appear to be another example of our unwritten constitution, although there are statutory time limits for things like general elections.

A new Writ is usually issued within three months of the vacancy. There have been a few times when seats remained vacant longer than six months. Seats will be left vacant towards the end of a Parliament. They are then filled at the general election."
However, I imagine, in this case, the Tories will want to get rid of a dodgy MP sooner rather than later, so that when it comes to the general election the controversy around him might have been forgotten.
