Looking at the competition over the years, there were 33 different finalists from 13* countries in the European Cup era, whilst there have been 21 different finalists from seven** countries in the Champions League era. * Italy, Spain, England, West Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia (Serbia), Scotland, Romania, Greece, Belgium and Sweden ** Spain, England, Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Portugal Despite the five-year ban on English clubs after Heysel, the competition was won on more occasions by a team from this country than any other during the European Cup era. It'll be interesting to see what kind of an impact the new (and increasingly bloated) format will have next season. José Mourinho's Fenerbahçe, runners-up to Galatasaray in the 2023–24 Süper Lig with 99 points (31–6–1), will enter the competition in the second qualifying round in July and would have to play up to 22 matches to reach the final. | |
