The more I think about it, the more I think we utterly wasted those pre-tournament friendlies trying to decide which players could warm the bench. When I see England play at the moment, I see players unsure of where their teammates are, or where they are likely to run, leading to disjointed play and slow movement of the ball, leading to few chances created. This is the kind of thing that requires time on the pitch together to get an understanding between players who rarely play together. So why spend so much time handwringing over who is going to come to the tournament and sit on the bench? Just seems odd and a waste (with the benefit of hindsight, naturally). |  |
