Halfway - what an outstanding effort so far from management and squad 11:55 - Jan 2 with 2335 viewsjasondozzell

It's only 18 months ago that we were standing up to that early onslaught from Sunderland in the opening game and I remember grimacing and thinking what a step up the Championship was going to be. We all know how that turned out. Hladky and Donacien set the tone that day.

To now be only one point from safety, in one of the most competitive Premier Leagues for years, well in touch with the teams above us and looking well set for second half of the season is just an insane achievement.

None of this is normal. I think we have got used to it but it's ridiculous what KMac has done.

It is outstanding how far we’ve come. I too stood/sat there at Sunderland and wondered how we’d adjust to that level with the extricating 10 mins added time. But we did and we have. This is a fabulous football club, we are blessed by what came after the ME era but even that was initially premised on doing exactly what GC20 ++ have 20 years later been able to pick up.

Whilst a natural reflection point, it being half way through the PL season, as with all sport there are no honours handed out at this point. It’s going to take a monumental effort for club, players and supporters to get us through on the right side of the line come May.

Let’s do this!

The table at this time last year:

I'm not sure that this season is any more 'competitive'. (It's a very hard thing to quantify.) What's most noticeable is how it was Everton's points deduction that was keeping them in the relegation conversation.

That's a good point. I guess it feels to me that the league as a whole is on a general trend of tightening - teams like Forest, Brentford, Brighton (certainly early on) etc. really feel representative of the way that the 'smaller' teams are increasingly serious outfits.

Palace are a good example. They may be struggling slightly this year but they are one hell of a good side nevertheless.

Obviously that's not the case with the recently promoted champ sides over recent years who are finding it tougher and tougher but if you can stay up and stabilise it seems like the gap to compete is closing.

I wonder if some of this is the quality of coaching/recruitment. Say a decade ago, United and the like had the financial advantage but does that count for less now with more focus on building clubs like Brighton?

Even Saints are interesting. They may well break Derby's record but they are not a shambles as such. A good footballing side that doesn't have the level to play the way they play and get results.

It's just a feeling and not based on data etc but I think the league is closing a bit although not at the top of course.

Interesting that only Burnley improved in the second half of the season out of the bottom three and that was only marginally. It might be because of my blue tinted specs, but I'd like to think that with a couple of additions in January and a bit more luck we could improve by quite a bit.

Burnley improved because they brought Muric back in….😇

I clearly remember under McCarthy when lots of people were questioning the wage bill and the level of value he was getting out of the squad. The decree was that given the wage bill, we were where we should be and it just had to be accepted, no lt questioned - we even had to be grateful.

KM and Pert have proven many right, that it’s not about wages on individual brilliance to raise a squad to the higher echelons but about coaching the right type of players to build a squad with the right camaraderie and bond.

Others before him prior to MM tried but failed through different means: PL a media man, PC a tracksuit manager but KM’s class as a level headed tactician and student of the game were the right angle and were reaping the rewards.

What I posted after the Sunderland game...most of the players I mentioned no longer at the club, but the fact that our recruitment targets good people as well as good players has been a huge part of our success. If we lose a few more this window or next, they can all be proud of what they've given to our club.

I effin' love our squad by BlueBoots 9 Aug 2023 19:15
Seems like an appropriate day to write this post, as quite a few players are making their first appearances of the season this evening.

Having read a few posts on here straight after a hard fought win at Sunderland, was a bit disappointed with some of the reaction (Highlight for me was a thread along the lines of "What have we learned from today's match?", to which one of the replies was that Edmundson and Jackson need replacing...[doh])

Can't remember if it was the same thread, but other posters thought we needed to bin off JD after the game because he gave the ball away a couple of times and didn't stop the cross that came into our box for their goal (at a time when he was probably seeing 2 footballs after being clattered by Hladky and starting to cramp up too). Few digs at Hladky's performance too; most of which seemed to be based on the fact that he isn't Walton. Already mentioned on another thread, but Hladky's reaction at the final whistle is already going into my highlight reel for the season; for me he's done what all good No.2 keepers do - train as if you're going to be playing every week anyway, and if the opportunity comes along to fill in, come in and do an outstanding job.

I think it's fair to say that Walton and Clarke would have likely played if available, but they weren't; just wanted to say how incredibly lucky we are to have players as good as Hladky and JD to step up when needed.

K McK / Ashton have alluded to our transfer policy being to bring in players who are an upgrade on what we have; could it possibly be the reason we aren't seeing signings is because we already have some damn good players (and people) in the building?

So cheers to Edmundson and Baggott who will get chances to fill in for a pair of centre-backs who contributed to a ridiculous run of clean sheets at the end of last season, Evans and Harness who helped us to get off to a flyer at the start of last season, and Ball and Aluko who have come back from injuries to bring their experience at this level to the group for a new season (on and off the pitch) To Jackson for making life hell for any left back who stupidly leaves a few yards of space empty behind him (despite the fact he'd probably prefer to be playing as a centre forward) To Edwards, who is probably desperate to start games, for coming off the bench so many times instead and making tiring opposition defenders wish they were heading in the opposite direction. And lastly to my favourite player Greg Leigh, who I was looking forward to seeing last season after watching the pre-season friendlies, only for us to sign one of the best young left backs in the country a few weeks later; with the kind of shifts our full-backs put in, 9 subs allowed on the bench, and 15 minutes of injury time looking to become the norm in matches, I hope to see more of you this season.

Poll: My morning poo-poo took 3 flushes to clear. Who do I call?
