Can someone explain the obstruction law to me please. 16:20 - Apr 19 with 309 viewsGeoffSentence

Every week I see players doing what appears to be blatant obstruction, clear body checks on players who are making a run but don't have the ball, but it never gets given.

This is not a whinge about the opposition by the way, Furlong was at it as well today, just wondering why obstruction never gets punished.

If refs picked up on every petty foul that happens in modern pro football, you'd have a whistle every 5 seconds & a game would be near unwatchable. Ref did OK today in what was a highly competitive game with a lot at stake.

Alternative view, if refs did pick up on all the niggly nonsense it would stop happening and the game would be more watchable. But this is a sidetrack to the OP.

IMPEDING THE PROGRESS OF AN OPPONENT WITHOUT CONTACT

Impeding the progress of an opponent means moving into the opponent’s path to obstruct, block, slow down or force a change of direction when the ball is not within playing distance of either player.

All players have a right to their position on the field of play; being in the way of an opponent is not the same as moving into the way of an opponent.

A player may shield the ball by taking a position between an opponent and the ball if the ball is within playing distance and the opponent is not held off with the arms or body. If the ball is within playing distance, the player may be fairly charged by an opponent.
