There is a wider point about modern business here. It has been taken over by a bunch of people who are very good at borrowing money and spending it, while rewarding themselves handsomely along the way, but really have very little idea of how to run a company, let alone profitably.
It's why things like Thames Water end up hollowed out. Maximal asset stripping is required to support the ecosystem of people demanding remuneration or fees and to service the enormous and over-leveraged debt they are using to buy their way in.
People label it "late-stage capitalism" and the like, but it bears as much relation to capitalism* as the Soviet Union did to the ideology of Marx and Engels**. A sham, lip-service at best, a thin cover for plundering.
* At its birth in the 15th to 18th centuries, modern capitalism was about the raising of finance to fund large-scale trade and business. Not a means of gambling on small (and sometimes contrived) fluctuations in the markets.
** Marx and Engels were guilty of a deeply flawed division of history into arbitrary phases, but at least they had the idea of egalitarianism and cooperation. Unlike the authoritarianism and cronyism of the Soviet system. |  |
