The Nancy Grave Roman space telescope 10:56 - Sep 6 with 330 viewsStokieBlue

This instrument is going to be a real step forward with regards to our understanding of the universe.

It's named after Nancy Grave Roman, who was Nasa's first chief astronomer in the 1960s and its first female executive.

It's got a very large field-of-view, approximately 100x that of the Hubble whilst retaining the same resolution meaning a lot more data will be packed into each image. It should help to improve understanding of the universe at a larger scale and dark matter as well as possibly finding more than 100,000 new exoplanets within our galaxy.

For some idea of the amount of data it will collect:

"By numbers, that means Hubble has managed to gather about 400 terabytes of data over its approximately 35 years of service so far. Roman is expected to be able to create 500 terabytes of data every single year.

"Its surveying capabilities are over 1,000 times faster than Hubble, and can chart 200 times more sky in a single image," NASA administrator Jared Isaacman said during a press conference about Roman in April. "What would take Hubble 2,000 years to process, Roman can do in a year — the images it captures will be so large there is not a screen in existence large enough to show them."" [1].

The wide field while keeping the resolution will be a gamechanger in how much work it can do, maybe covering several projects in a single image, making detecting large structures* easier.




* I don't mean aliens, but configurations of galaxies, stars and dust.
