All of those proposals seem like big steps forward to me. What I find astonishing is this quote from a the highest Sunni authority that the changes are:

“unjust for women"

Sure, he can disagree with the changes, that's absolutely fine, but I'd like to know how on earth that sentence can be justified with any evidence whatsoever. It's a ridiculous statement.

It's a bold initiative but I suspect it will take years to bed in as far as social culture goes, when I was in Tunisia there seemed a world of difference between Tunisians in the capital and the Gulf of Tunis resort towns compared to the places on the edge of the desert. Complex arguments in favour of differential rights for men and women, in favour of arranged marriages and so on are stock in trade for some Muslim clerics and thinkers (see Ziauddin Sardar's 'Balti Britain' for an attempt at vindicating arranged marriages).

If the concept of marriage is weakened, then it offers less security for women.

Conventional wisdom is the enemy of thought.

Not if they are being forced to marry the man who raped them and made them pregnant, I think women might have to prepare for a life without security in those circumstances. Not everyday I grant you but we do see reports on more than one occasion.

Marriage isn't weakened by equality and woman shouldn't need to be married for security in a more equal society.

This is your standard cop-out reply and rather insulting to women.

It is often used when dealing with angry posters who refuse to consider other points of view, and just label them 'ridiculous'. What you mean is that 'you disagree'.

I'm not angry :).

If you ever bothered to actually support your snippets with evidence maybe they wouldn't be seen as ridiculous?

Please explain how having equality in marriage is:

a) Weakening marriage
b) Less security for women

You've done neither, you've just been contrary as usual.

Oh I see, you don't apply those rules to yourself, only to other people. I wonder why you do this?

Deflection.

You've not given any evidence, I at least try to provide evidence if requested - what do you want evidence of? You are the one making an assertion - you should provide evidence for that assertion.

You won't of course.

Still you ignore the point, and only point, I am making. 'It's a ridiculous statement' is not evidence. You mean you disagree.

OK, how can equality ever be bad for the person being elevated to that level?

On that basis I think it's a ridiculous statement.

What about if they don't want to be elevated to that 'level'? Have you thought about that before you say it's a ridiculous statement?

You are saying that people advocate their own belittlement and persecution.

History would tend to disagree with you. I also think it's rather insulting to the people involved.

No, you are saying that I'm saying that, not me. Then you're getting insulted on other people's behalf, and refuse to think about it. Yet you want to claim it's 'ridiculous'. Why do you do this?

That was the implication from this:

"What about if they don't want to be elevated to that 'level'? Have you thought about that before you say it's a ridiculous statement?"

This is clearly pointless, why do you do this?

Yes, that was your implication, not mine. I see you're now indulging in playground behaviour. Admit it, you have no interest in the subject do you?
