1 gerken is still sh*t. Don't be fooled by shop shot stopping he can't kick, catch or communicate

2 the formation is a problem. Edward and ward are touching the line and this leaves Jackson terribly isolated. We are using him as a target man and he has to chase his own flick ons.

Monk changed the formation and saved the game. All of the new signings are good players, it is just the formation and trying to fit them in

The formation worked or we would not have gone two up in the first half. Monk came up with a solution for Brum, which needed countering once they had 5 attacking players on the pitch, that I think is the question for PH and the players.

There is a general lack of communication and leadership when we are defending, not sure that all can be laid at Gerken's door, as it was an issue with Bart too, but desperately needs fixing.

In fairness Brum offered a goal threat for far longer periods than we did. I guess teams now consider us vulnerable particularly against sustained pressure.

2 nil up but could have been different. They hit the post early which looked in all day and Jonas cleared off the line by millimetres. We took the 1st goal really well but he came from nothing and the other was a set pieces that they made a massive mess over. Not saying we we poor but we weren't carving them open for fun. Chalobah was our pick but he had a completely free role unmarked. Jackson was therefore occupying their spare man and trying to play 2 roles

If you play 1 up top you have to link him and that is the missing bit. We either play wide wingers in a 442 or we tuck them in for a 451

Agree with a lot of both these comments. Defensively we were repeatedly a bit of a mess and no-one took control and leadership.

The first goal was a real indication of how this formation should work. When Jackson is played through as the lone striker we desperately need midfielders to get up there quickly and be available for the pass. In this case it was Nolan,it was a lovely move, and he needs to do a lot more of that. There were at least two other similar occasions when Jackson got into an attacking position but had no-one to pass to, and this has happened regularly in past games. Huws did this really well last season. Edwards should have the speed for it, but doesn't get up there enough when these situations arise, similarly Ward. Edun might have done so but was sat on the bench.

Wondered how long before Gerks was going to get it in the neck. He made numerous excellent saves today, if it was Bart in that position we would be lording his performance today. As is proved, Bart deserved to be dropped yet according to blinkered supporters he was somehow motm on here for 4 of the opening games.

Agree about Gerken, he saved us on numerous occasions.

It's lauding, BTW. From the Latin.

Well said ITFC bam. There are so many blinkered on here regarding Bart. Yes he has been very good for us but he has made clangers notably against Blackburn. It you make clangers and don't improve your kicking you are going to be dropped and in my opinion giving Gerks a chance was justified. He has been a true professional in waiting for his chance a chance that he deserved and I hope he makes the most of it.

I think the issues you raised have been present in most games, whether Bart or Gerken has been in goal and the lack of support for the 'loan gunman'. I also feel leadership when defending is a key area to improve. We struggle to hold the ball in midfield for sufficient periods to build on, making link play difficult and inviting pressure.

You can see why PH and many others admire Brentford. The formation Brentford played with had plenty of overlap, though they class it as a 4-2-3-1, in reality they often had four bombing in the middle with the wide players on the overlap, very well done and great to watch. Then PH made some changes and made a game of it in the second half. Another observation about Brentford was their 'individual' confidence in carrying the ball, which again aids link play and is essential if you are playing one up front, which is why we seem to be hoofing up to Jackson far more than I think the intention is (see Hull).

The issues are more about quality and confidence for Town, which results of course can change.
