in terms of support among American people for Trump the man, his views and approach.
But this wasn't just Trump v Biden (or Trump v almost anyone else). It was also Republican v Democrat, "conservative" v "liberal" - even, to an extent, rural/small town v urban. There are a very large number of people who will vote for the Republican programme and philosophy, almost irrespective of who is in charge. There are swathes of the country (as in the UK) who will traditionally go for whichever is the more conservative of the parties, just out of habit and perceived alignment.
In addition, Biden was not a forceful, charismatic candidate likely to draw voters to him (e.g. Macron). He is in no way a revolutionary. He is - and was largely marketed as - a pretty regular guy who was not Donald Trump. He offers a return to earlier norms, rather than real change, but without promising to resurrect the prosperity which many areas enjoyed during the post-War boom.
In this cycle, the Democrats have perhaps relied too much upon revulsion for Trump the individual to drive voters into their arms. It has certainly run things very close and may yet cost them victory. |  |

They were far more subtle about it than Trump could ever be. But the tactic still relies on external force to drive voters in, rather than one's own strength pulling them. That external force is then vulnerable to being choked by such things as traditional Republicanism, or antipathy to "liberal urban elites". | |

There is all that and the Democratic Party (by and large small c conservative by British standards) needs to know how to broaden it's appeal in those states.
There are also severe structural biases within the US electoral machinery: voter suppression, gerrymeandering and over-reliance on courts. This was good on that:
