Cook looking set for Sunderland (him or Cowleys)... 09:52 - Dec 2 with 328 viewsunstableblue

... I have some serious reservations (see below) over his playing style, but seems by far the best candidate being referenced for replacing Lambert. Wigan fans rate him highly and as a person. And perhaps we'd finely have a decent press conference.

Management style

Cook has tended to put his trust in a 4-2-3-1 formation during his managerial career, especially over the last couple of years at Wigan. He makes use of a sturdy double-pivot to help protect a traditional back four, with a physically robust defensive structure all-in-all.

The focus is on defending first and going from there, which was particularly successful in the final weeks of last season, in which Cook’s Latics registered 10 clean sheets from the last 14 matches.

Last term, in particular, their play was geared around the out-ball to towering Wales international Kieffer Moore up front. Only Preston and QPR completed more long balls in the Championship last term.

They’re also drilled to be fiercely competitive, which can have its downsides in terms of disciplinary issues: only Wednesday and Birmingham committed more fouls last term, while they were dished out a league-high six red cards, as well as 85 yellows (fourth most).

Poll: How many points will Town get from 5 (Wat, Boro, Hull, Cov, Hudd)?
