Scientists in Antartica have found marine organisms living 900m below the ice sheets adding to the list of extreme environments in which life manages to survive. There are quite a number of extremophiles now which increases the hopes of finding simple life elsewhere in the solar system.
It also allows better calibration of one of the inputs for things like the Drake equation although that is of course still mainly guesswork given some of the variables.
