If most are new next year then I hope and believe they will raise the standard of the remaining, like a professional leader at cb would bring woolfy forward and so on

I think even having Chambers or Wilson at centre back alongside Woolfenden would have helped him this season. Instead he got a pointless Premier League youngster (albeit our defence has not been dreadful for the most part) and then, understandably, shoved out on the right on his return to the side.
