Now more than ever do I feel that the group system in the Pizza trophy is terrible. I can't imagine many/any clubs make money from the group stage games - I would even hazard a guess that some end up losing money on those ties.
The former format was a straight knockout tournament, and it worked that way.
Am I alone in thinking that the EFL Trophy would be much more enjoyable if it were a total knockout tournament? I know the format changed to facilitate the U21 teams (why... go knows).
What brings this up now is that Qatar 2022 is going to have a big impact on lower league teams as well, surely truncating the ELF Trophy (or even scrapping it all together for a year) would make a lot of sense for next season.
