West Ham v Ipswich 1970-71 16:12 - Jun 4 with 1911 viewsChurchman

In memory of Frank Clarke, a short clip from the above game. Ok, he doesn’t score but he does appear in the goal celebration frames! Great second goal btw. Worth a watch for that and the awesome state of pitch. Bet it wasn’t the worst either!

Not seen that one before! Greaves still top notch poacher, should Alf have taken him to Mexico 70'? Great goal celebration! for Defenders didn't look too happy with Sivell!

Sivell made a right pigs ear of it. I could see why the defenders were unimpressed.

Jimmy Greaves was an interesting one. I’m not sure he played much for Alf after 66. He was certainly coming to the end of his career, hence playing for West Ham. Still knew where the goal was.

The forwards at Mexico 70 were Astle, Hurst, Clarke, Lee and Osgood.

Greaves played only three more times for England after the 1966 World Cup, scoring a single goal. His final cap came in a 1—0 win over Austria on 27 May 1967. At the time, he was England's all-time top goalscorer but was succeeded the following year by Bobby Charlton. Although Greaves was called up for Euro 1968, he remained an unused substitute throughout the tournament, as the team finished in third place. He retired from international football early the following year after telling Ramsey that he had no intention of becoming a bit-part player in the England squad.

Showed Greaves was still a top goal scorer as all have said. I lived near West Ham for a while and went along to see him , Moore and Hurst.

But what about Robertson's goal - I still think of the the purchases Robson made, Robertson was one of the most important in the context of the club's situation at the time, Cant beat Mariner, Muhren and Thijjsen, but up there?

Good point re Hunter. One of the best purchases of the lot. Fantastic player and a lovely bloke too.

This game was seen as a crucial relegation battle at the time, although the ineptitude of Burnley & Blackpool ensured that both West Ham & Ipswich finished 7 points clear of the drop. Robertson's great strike seemed to surprise Brian Moore as much as the crowd.
Typical Greaves for his first goal - moving before anyone else, anticipating a rebound & so getting there first.
Pitch as amazing but probably normal for those times.

Agreed. He was my favourite player at the time, but has been completely overshadowed by later success and players. And I loved his chant: "We've got Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy Robertson on the wing, on the wing."

Although Robertson was only at Town for 2 & a bit seasons, his influence was much greater than that would suggest, with the signing of him & Frank Clarke helping stave off relegation for 2 seasons. 1971-72 was the first season I started watching Town regularly & Robertson was the obvious star player, although Colin Viljoen was pretty useful as well as Robson slowly built a competitive team.

Viljoen was in the team a while before and was a fixture until the mid/late 70s. The famous dispute before the 1978 was all about him or Roger. It’s a shame it ended badly.

He was actually a really classy player. A sublime passer of the ball who weighed in with more than the odd goal. Not the fasted but boy, he got about the pitch. He would have suited the modern game. 305 appearances, 45 goals in 12 years at the club qualifies him for legend status.

Great player who even put in a couple of appearances for England including a 2-2 with Wales I was at.
