Tepid maybe, insipid possibly. Either way that was the most ineffective 45 minutes I have seen us play this season, lots of possession with no end product. Burns was completely snuffed out by their left back who had a very good game. We looked better on the left, but rarely probed down that side. Our best, if not only, good chance of the first half came from an attack down that side with Leif cutting inside and pulling a lovely ball back to set up Chaplin, who completely fluffed. Both of the wide central defenders were playing as overlapping centre backs, but I don't recall the ball being played to either of them once. Maybe the idea was for them to act as decoys and pull defenders over to them. If it was it didn't work, Lincoln just ignored them and kept everyone in the box. The end result was that both JD and Edmundson were making gut busting runs to absolutely no purpose. And their goal. What a gift. The one chance they had and I would wager they could not believe it how much space he had on the back post. I have no idea where the defence was, but he had all the time in the world and an open goal. Couldnt miss. Didnt. The second half was attack against defence. We totally dominated it, and actually attacked with purpose and urgency in this half. But still without any real threat. Lincoln could have got a second from another corner with another man unmarked at the back, this time it was from a wider angle and the ball was headed into the ground before bouncing about and being cleared. Loads more posssion and pressure from Town followed, but still without really testing the keeper. So many shots blazed wildly over the bar. A few scuffed wide and one or two tamely into the keepers hands. When we did break them one hit the woodwork and John-Jules did that. Quite what that was I am not sure. The ball was heading in, the keeper was nowhere near it there were no defenders behind it, just John_jules who did that. But what was that, was he trying to get out of the way? Was he trying to flick it in? I don't know. But whatever it was he made a pigs ear of it and cleared on behalf of Lincoln. Ah well, bad day at the office all round. Had to happen sooner or later I suppose. | |
