He was bright last time out but it was only 5 minutes. Had a bit longer to watch him last night, and as a defensive midfielder instead of an LB/CB where he’s usually played.
I liked him in that role – looks to have the same composure/intelligence that we’ve come to expect from Humphreys and he didn’t put a foot wrong with the ball.
The 2-on-1 against him that led to the goal was marginal. Maybe he should have gone into challenge but the risk was he’d leave the other player completely wide open. And when he backed off to try and slow them down, Koroma still did well to release the scorer perfectly. Anyway it was a crazy incident when we were already throwing the kitchen sink at Pompey so can’t see it as much of an error in that context.
But looks good for our future – even short term if he’s close to being seen as cover at CM and LB/LCB. Humphreys quick progression to getting starts and being a key player shows that a lack of league experience is no real barrier. And I get the feeling that the youngsters are even a little more comfortable playing McKenna-ball than a lot of the senior players.
