A Motown giant.

Released the first ever Motown song, Money (That’s What I Want), and went in to co write songs including "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)", "Cloud Nine", "I Can't Get Next to You", "Psychedelic Shack", "Ball of Confusion”, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", “Friendship Train” and many others, before going back to a singing career.

A true legend, but mainly on the song-writing front.

He gets a mention in Billy Bragg's Levi Stubbs' Tears, a great song about a domestic abuser survivor who gets comfort from Motown songs.

"Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong
Are here to make right everything that's wrong
Holland and Holland and Lamont Dozier too
Are here to make it all okay with you."

That's a great tune but also possibly one of the saddest and most depressing songs ever written. I still struggle to hear it

I think that's right, and I've only listened to it today after many years, but I do love the line.

"It's you and me against the world, kid," she mumbled to herself

When the world falls apart some things stay in place. Levi Stubbs tears roll down his face.

Song is full of great but incredibly gritty and harrowing lines.
Yer, I only played it today for the first time in years after clicking yer link.
