A true legend, but mainly on the song-writing front.
He gets a mention in Billy Bragg's Levi Stubbs' Tears, a great song about a domestic abuser survivor who gets comfort from Motown songs.

That's a great tune but also possibly one of the saddest and most depressing songs ever written. I still struggle to hear it
