I was on the away terrace, about a third of the way from the front. At the final whistle some booed, but not too many. Some just walked out in silence, a handful stayed to applaud but others - and let's be clear about this - were giving the few players who came over either one finger, or two, and shouting that the players should "f**k off" and that they were "s**t". I'm posting this because I've seen elsewhere that Morsy was "out of order" and should have the armband stripped because he reacted. Let's also be clear, the pretty much silent away end is not why we didn't win last night, that's on the players and the manager, but there is a story developing that an amazing fanbase is being let down. We're amazing in terms of numbers and spend, that cannot be denied, an average of just under 26,000 in L1 is staggering. But most of what I heard last night was people moaning about us keeping the ball, then giving the ball away, then lots of "do something". When teams defend in depth, as Rovers did, the best way round it is to keep the ball moving to look for gaps and that's what we did last night. We just didn't do it quickly enough at times, and not accurately enough at others. Please let's not have any of this "the players didn't look bothered" or "weren't trying". We tried, we worked, just not well enough to create enough chances. Rovers were on their knees at the end after working that hard for 90 minutes to keep us out. Poor performance, top two is gone, failing to win last night is not the fault of the fans. But the poor, long-suffering supporters being insulted by their own players is a dangerous narrative that needs to be nipped in the bud. Everyone was annoyed/frustrated last night, a few moved over into direct abuse of their own players. Morsy was one of the few who actually came over, I don't see the point of insulting him. | |
