Do I need to subscribe to the 5.99 a month to buy a match pass for the game? I've got an account, but it doesn't want to let me buy the game.

for tonight, no problem.

I subscribe and bought a match pass this morning but doesn't seem to recognise that I I've bought it, I did get a confirmation email after purchase. Am I missing something to activate it? It does seem a very clumsy system.

Me too, managed to get on the right page now but says that the game isnt available in my region! Even though I've bought it..... It will let me watch the prematch though

You need to select match day pass option. It seems to default to subscription(which will likely be highlighted in blue)
Press Match Pass and then you should see option to buy pass.
