Given the amount of cr@p referees have to put up with - including at lower levels of the game - is it so surprising that there is not a vast pool of quality. Only the most thick-skinned, self confident and pig-headed survive to reach the top. They are there for their qualities of being screamed at by entitled yobboes (in the crowd and often also on the pitch) without suffering a breakdown, rather than fine decisionmaking.
