Recap: a couple of blokes, who are probably deeply dodgy, have been held for 20 years without trial. TWENTY YEARS! When places like Russia or South Korea do this, we are rightly appalled. They reach a plea deal- which is to an extent how the rather odd US justice system works. Rather than actually press to trial, it is normal to reach deals and lots of pressure is placed on accuseds to do so. That deal does not get them off, but simply concludes matters with agreement they won't get the death penalty (which is barbaric, counter productive and abhorrent imo in any event- only Belarus and Russia still do it in Europe... Take the hint americans!). I understand why many people felt that was wrong- they want a day in court, they want retribution via the death penalty. Whatver we may think of that. However, there is no good answer or solution. Now, the US Defence secretary has revoked the deal. That is absolutely extraordinary. After 20 years, a deal was struck, and it is to be reneged upon. Worse still, they can never have a fair trial because any jury is now going to know they have been prepared to admit guilt. The outcome, presumably, will be that they just stay inside without trial. One has to question how, if there was solid evidence, a trial has not happened yet. It would plainly be in US interests to prove and close the issue if they are able. One has to suspect they cant. This ally, with whom we have a special relationship, and which ios supposedly the leader of the free world and champion of values of justice and democracy? In many respects it is in the dark ages. | |
