An era of the club I’m a bit in the dark about if I’m honest so it was good to learn.

Tough taskmaster when it was needed. After Ramsey we were in a bit of a freefall, though Milburn did start the youth program that bore such fruit later on. Made us 2nd Division champs, but saw Wolves as a better bet when offered the job, who could say at that time! Got them to the UEFA Cup Final, though an odd one as it was against Spurs. League Cups, some good players there in those days.

McGarry was in charge for the first ever ITFC game I went to. Don’t remember it of course. His record here speaks for itself. He did a good job and clearly had an eye for a player. He gave Viljoen his debut at a young age and he went on to be a terrific player. Mills of course, but his inspired signing was John O’Rourke in 67/68. He wasn’t at the club long but his partnership with Crawford was deadly and that is what got us promoted.

He reads very much as a man of his time. Hard as hell and not to be crossed. He had some tough characters playing for him too. People like Chopper Jefferson, Tommy Carroll and of course Bill Baxter.

I read that Cobbold tried to get him to stay. They clearly had a good relationship as JC generally did with people, but he’d made his mind up. From what I’ve read he regretted it later. No least because the Cobbolds were such good people to work for.

Overall, a good manager for us who is a bit over shadowed by Alf before and Bobby after. His record though speaks for itself. Probably in the same bracket as John Lyall for me.
