Energy price cap up 6.4% 16:19 - Feb 25 with 5176 views | Pinewoodblue | I really thought, when we had a change of government, that one of the first crazy Tory policies to be changed was linking electricity prices to the wholesale price of gas. This enables a bigger profit to be made on electricity generated by wind & solar. There really is no justification for UK energy to be among the most e pensive in Europe. OFGEM isn’t fit for purpose.

It does sometimes go down, but this is unusual. The prices follow (something like) the average price of units of gas. [Post edited 25 Feb 16:27]

But aren't caps supposed to set a maximum price rather than allowing prices to keep going up?

They stop you being completely fleeced by the energy companies when you fall back onto their default tariff. But no government can permanently make expensive things cheap, without permanently increasing taxes.

So, 'somewhat' fleeced then, got it.

Energy price cap up 6.4% on 16:46 - Feb 25 with 3661 views | Steve_M | Sure, but it's not an instant fix as the supposedly sensitivity of the electricity market to marginal pricing is a 20-year problem. Making instant changes risks something else going wrong. The market reforms of 2001 ("NETA") old CEGB setting pricing. It worked to some extent but the world has changed and so should the market. There is a certain irony, though, that government initially liked privatisation as the private supply businesses got the blame for pricing and we've now come full circle to the government being responsible. And for that reason, it will change but it's probably on a long list.

Then electricity prices will go through the roof with no respite in sight for decades. We will be susbsidising the French taxpayers through EDF and any corporate investors will be creaming off the rest. Anyone with any sense would call a halt to the stupid scheme before more widespread environmental damage is caused, but Milliband believes that using a French company and Uranium from Kazhakstan safeguards UK energy security!

The Labour leader said in March 2023: “We’re announcing today that Labour would freeze next year’s council tax, using those windfall profits. It’s a choice the government can make now that money is on the table. We would obviously vote for it. Ten billion pounds and they’re not using it to help working people.” Obviously easy to say when in opposition, can't recall him every reversing this quote/position.

They aren’t going to build any material green energy infrastructure anyway. The watered down proposals don’t amount to much more than subsidies for firms which are already well capitalised. Even then there’s little more than an amateurish website rather than a pipeline of impressive projects. And most importantly- without changing the structure of how energy is priced then you can add loads of renewables but won’t benefit in price at all (the government haven’t mentioned that which I’m sure isn’t an accident). You’ll still be paying whatever is the most expensive source on the grid. Sorry to be the bearer of more disappointment in this government.

Freezing council tax just destroys local services. Our local council leaders (Tories) have just boasted of freezing their element of the council tax for 12 years in a row. At the same time, our local services have been decimated and even this year they have announced another requirement for £5m of savings. Those savings/cuts won't have been required if they'd raised Council tax by £10 a year (the average suggested).

I very firmly agree with this. A lot of the current issues relating to local government have been hugely exacerbated by the freezes to council tax during the austerity years. That lack of small increases, and the compound interest on them, has left local government with a huge funding issue. That and the spiralling cost of social care has screwed local government.

Maybe they wouldn't have so many funding issues if as with many Councils they didn't pay Head executives £127,000 to £148,000, Deputy Chief executive £105,000-£127,000, Chief Operating officer to be recruited, Director of housing £83,000-£95,000, Director of planning control £83,000-£95,000, Director of Operations and climate control £83,000 -£95,000, Director of sustainable communities and economy $83,000-£95,000 and it goes on. 57 in total with the "Lower paid £50,000-£60,000. I live in Needham Market and recently many of the paths were skimmed and then new tarmac laid. We received a letter telling us when it would happen and what would happen. In that a weed killer would be sprayed so preventing weeds from coming through. Literally within days weeds and grass came through the newly laid tarmac. A neighbour contacted the Council and told them about this. The answer was that the job was signed off and paid. Some Councils have taken up hairbrained schemes and have lost millions because of. In many cases it's not because councils don't have enough money it's because they have too many chiefs and are frivolous with the spending.
Energy price cap up 6.4% on 16:46 - Feb 26 with 2309 views | DJR | For several years, my water consumption has been constant, and my direct debit payments have been constant and have been such that I have always been slightly in credit. The bill that has just dropped indicates that my direct debit will rise by well over 30%. That's the joy of living in the Southern Water area, and this appears to be the explanation from their website: I assume there will be a further rise when I get the next bill in July to reflect the fact that bill will cover the whole of the next financial year. "From April 2025 the average household bill for combined water and wastewater will rise by 46.7%, from £1.31 per day to £1.93 per day. For the average household, fresh water only bills will go up by 40.0% from £0.55 per day to £0.77 per day and wastewater only bills by 51.5% from £0.76 per day to £1.15 per day."
