Best 25 players of the first 25 years of the 21C 15:55 - Jul 5 with 1902 viewsRIPbobby

I have been meaning to write this for a number of months. My love of Ice hockey has kind of lead to this as I have seen many of these done in North America.

Most of my picks have spent a number of years at Portman Road but my final pic of Dara O'Shea is one that I think will stay here a fair while and will be a modern legend for us. These 25 players are essentially based on 3 teams. The great Burley teams at the beginning of the century, the better players around the one off team Big Mick had and the current period that Kieron has nurtured. I hope a few more of you have a go a this as it is quite good fun and gives you a chance to reminisce over some good and a not so good years. :) I did at one stage have little pin notes about each player, but that made the post huge as there is so much to say about each one. Enjoy...

I probably agree with 50-60% of yours, another 20% are justifiable but wouldn’t be in my 25, but my god there are a small number of awful choices in that list.

Smith, Jackson, Sears, Edwards, Burns and Broadhead shouldn’t be anywhere near this list when you have the likes of Legwinski, McGoldrick, Waghorn, MacAuley, Kelvin Davis, Bart and Kuqi missing.

Sorry one of my rules for picking players was they had to have played 3 seasons, hence the reason I put Dara as being an outlier in by only playing 3/4 of 1 season. I just couldn't put players that hardly played in as they will never be ITFC legends. Hence that rules out a few of IPS_wich choices and Mr Delap as you are alluding to.

Perhaps I should have explained my entry rules a bit better. lol

Wasn't Delap I was alluding to...! Although if it's a minimum 3 full seasons then I think this one will just fall foul of that rule.

Yes I think that is a good call.

I originally toyed with just going for the Burley team and the Kierons team, but I wanted to have a fair representation of the full 25 years. I dare say if we delve into the breakdown of when all my players played, there may be years that are not represented. But I tried to be fair when its not easy to. In there 25 years we have had a good period at the beginning of the century and a good period leading up to the 25 years mark and 1 good season somewhere in between. Tough call to make.

Shefki Kuqi should be in ahead of either Sears or T Smith.

I ummmed and arrrrrred about him for ages. He was great in the loan spell and scored 25 yarder after 25 yarder for fun at Portman Road. When we bought him outright the first season he was sensational. Then however many seasons he stayed after never really played many games. Whilst I agree he was a genius of a footballer and probably in the top 5 players of ability. He just spent too much time injured for me to put him in.

Sefki was a difficult one for me. Whilst he did so well for us and scored his fair share of goals I just did not think he was a very good footballer. In his era as a footballer you had to technically better than he was in my opinion. He was a superb athlete, not much of a footballer. In fact I think you could toss a coin between him and Kayden Jackson. Shefki would have done much better in the modern era with his athleticism.

Had to be cut to make room for Kayden Jackson apparently…

I know a lot of our fans dont like Kayden but he is the epitome of a modern footballer... fast and fit. If you remember back to when Kieron first came in we were brilliant for a few weeks and it looked like we were going to push for the playoffs. Kayden got injured and our season fizzed out. As a footballer Kayden has not got a patch on McGoldrick. But if you cast your mind back 'goldie' played a half season on loan and then the next season and then for ages afterwards spent time in and out of the treatment room. We never really got 3 full seasons out of him.

Whearas Kayden did a job for us a number of times. Think of all the times Burns murdered their full backs for 65 minutes and Kayden came on for him and murdered them some more. He filled in other areas when we had problems. He was a very big part of our double promotion. Yes I get he is not a fashionable player, but his effort was second to none and in my eyes will be thought of as a legend. He was with us a good amount of years.

But football is about opinions and yours is valid.

I wouldn’t say I didn’t like him and acknowledge that Kayden played a decent part in the double promotion but he isn’t in the best 25 players this century. He isn’t even in the best 25 players of McKennas reign, otherwise he’d still be here.

Seems like your list is more of a personal favourites or iconic players than ‘best’ which is fair enough but not what the title says. Although I would have Didzy in a fan favourite or icon list over Jackson in any case, even if we rarely saw the best of him.

Only played 2 and a quarter seasons.

One of my favourite players of all time. Such a great dribbler and finisher. Would be even better in the modern game.

That's who I was alluding to earlier on the thread but being a little cryptic about it. Clearly one of our best of the last 25 years but surprisingly not with us for a full 3 years.

He was player of the decade for the 2010s. When he was injured, we missed him so much it was painful.

I just had a look at 'goldies stats for us and Sheff United and strangely enough he played slightly more games for us and scored slightly more goals for us. Fire years for us and 4 for the blunts. Fascinating.

Goalkeeper?

Bart arguably kept us in games we had no right being in and massively helped paper over cracks.

Yep I think I should have found a place for him in the 25. Most likely be him in and Freddie Sears out.
