Revisiting Hackney... and Ruiz? 11:20 - Aug 14 with 4358 viewsSamWhiteUK

I've seen a few people say that they wouldn't be surprised if Hackney ended up here and I wouldn't be either, but what happened with the other guy... Ruiz? There was all that, he doesn't want to come here, no he never said that, no he's staying put... is that all wrapped up now?

It's never that cut and dry

It's employment at the end of the day- players will sign for clubs who offer the best deals. This rosy ideal of loyalty that many posters are wedded to just doesn't exist in most cases.

Aye, this was part of why I was really apprehensive about the Philogene signing, he had his chance and rejected us for Villa. I didn't like the message it sent of going back in for him, but I think maybe I was just being a bit silly.

Because he might want to come here if he still hasn't found a prem club by the end of the window

Can you blame him? They had matching rights, I think 99% of players would choose the established prem side over us

I can, yeah - there's no way he was ever going to get into that team at Villa.
As I say, people probably shouldn't listen to anything I say surrounding the deal or the player as I'm fairly confident I've got an illogical bias against him because of the nature of the deal.

I'm hoping he wins me round this season.

You blame Philogene? On what basis? The way it was reported, he had no choice - the buyback/matching rights allegedly included Philogene tied to a pre-agreed contract for his return. These types of contracts are often framed that way (otherwise they would be worthless to the club with the matching rights, as the player could invalidate it).

This is a good example of illogical (and unreasonable) bias against the player. No offence intended - you did volunteer the accusation

I think you misunderstand what ‘first refusal’ or ‘first option’ is in this scenario!

I believe Aston Villa simply had a buy back clause and had to be informed of incoming transfer bids?

Tolouse looking to sign Ruiz as well?

And they want AAH?

What a strange disparity in quality they are after

It was reported as 'matching right'. Now, of course, nothing was publicly said by the parties that would know (AV, JP and the agent), but we can only go on what was reported at the time.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5626592/2024/07/10/aston-villa-jaden-philogene/

This following link is football related, but not specifically player related, and does discuss the legal position.

https://northridgelaw.com/practical-guide-to-matching-rights/

“If any other person makes me an offer for my rights, I will come to you and, if you are willing to make me the same offer, I will sell you those rights.”

Legal this could be construed in a way that any agreement between Hull and Ipswich was void as soon as Villa exercised their matching rights. In such a scenario, Hull and Phillogene had no option.

Without us knowing the precise details of the matching rights clause in the contract, we will never know, but Philogene may have had no option having signed (whatever was in) the original contractual matching rights.

It's not that he doesn't want to play for us. He just wants a faster ticket to the premier league. We will get him at the end of the month.

Agree it’s not clear cut, but that is the basis of my point. We just don’t know the actual situation. He may or may not have had a choice, but by blaming Philogene, people are assuming that he chose not to join when there is a viable alternative.

Why are you still doubting this after I shared the link quoting McKenna saying he wanted to sign but couldn't because of the contractual situation, in the Broadhead thread. I noticed you totally ignored that comment even though you doubted my initial comment and asked for proof.

Here's a quote from McKenna for you, make your own mind up:

“He has shown a desire to come here, not just now but in the summer as well. It's pretty well known that we tried to bring Jaden to the football club in the summer and amongst having the options of quite a lot of well-established Premier League clubs, his expressed desire was to come here."

“It was something that we tried to do in the end, but it wasn't possible with the contractual situation with Aston Villa, and he went back to his previous club."

Ah - thank for that. I’d missed McKenna’s comments, which seem to support my views on the likely matching rights in the contract, and the implications removing Philogene’s choice.

I'd imagine it won't be that difficult to get Hackney here now he has worked for Rob Edwards for a few weeks and saw the result against Doncaster the other night. He's probably phoning us.
