Leadership on the pitch. Decisions on the pitch. Those things seem to be our undoing. Last night Oxford got a couple of set pieces midway in the first half. That put them in our half in bigger numbers. They stayed up. We carry on trying to play out and make a mistake. Goal. But my question is why doesn't one of the leaders in the team say that this is the time to get rid. To bang it long. We might not get away with that against really great teams but Oxford? A few moments in their half again and we'd have been back in control. Second half we get level. Nice and early. Nearly 35 minutes to win the game. But we get out of shape. We stop probing. We expect the subs to finish the win. It doesn't happen. Our left side goes all upfield, no one covers. We punt the ball down the throat of a bog standard centre back and a great break kills us. Bad decisions on the pitch by experienced players.
Now my question is whether the players are coached to make decisions or simply not trusted to do so. If they are allowed in-play decisions then the mistakes last night are down to them. If they are expected to play to strict and rigid instructions then some of the blame falls on the coaches. And ultimately the manager who mandates how we play.
We had a point last night and threw it away. In effect we beat ourselves.
