| A thought I had when watching the ITV highlights show 20:19 - Feb 9 with 643 views | Guthrum | from Saturday has come back to me with the start of this evening's game. A lot of people complain about our No.9s missing gilt-edged chances. But with a very few exceptions (e.g. McBurnie), most other teams' strikers are little, if any, better. Spurned chances all over the shop. Several goes needed to put the ball into the net. It's too easy to be critical of our own players, who we watch all the time, comparing them with selected highlights from others. | |

| A thought I had when watching the ITV highlights show on 20:52 - Feb 9 with 537 views | J2BLUE | Hirst has a conversion rate of 14%. Exclude penalties and his conversion rate is 12.5%. This isn't massively different from most of the strikers in the division but it's behind the best performing strikers this season. Azon has a conversion rate of below 5% Both are 5 goals below their xG this season If Azon (who has been unlucky) could get up to 15% and Hirst could get to 20% (more than capable) it would make a big difference. | |

The impression is that few teams have "best performing"-level strikers in their ranks. Underlines how hard they are to come by (and keep consistently in form). Much like Szmodics, the way we play and the defences faced at the moment do not really suit Hirst. He's better charging beyond the back line, muscling his way past the last man and in on goal. Which results in him appearing forlorn and frustrated*. Also probably why Azon is being favoured for his more terrier-like working in tighter spaces. Tho the Spaniard is not such a good marksman, or perhaps unfortunate in 'keepers making extraordinary saves. * His stationary receiving-the-ball control is not as good as when he's running on to it, either. | |
