Not sure anyone else likes him but he is my favourite director.
His work is well summed up thus.
"A Rohmerian film is one in which people talk, and talk at length, whether they’re walking or at home, at work or in transit, on the job or on vacation. What they talk about, mostly, is love. Even when they’re talking about other things, as they often do—about art, philosophy, other relationships, personal preferences of various sorts—they’re still talking, by proxy, about matters of the heart."
Anyway, the reason for this thread is that a translation of a book he wrote in 1946 has recently been published.
I am currently reading it. It is a delight and very much like watching one of his films. But it might not have the same effect on someone who hasn't seen his films.
And those are not for me but then again I've always preferred foreign and independent films.
But this neatly sums up Rohmer's films.
The nearest equivalent to him in my view is Woody Allen, my second favourite director, although his work is more comedic.
it was more of a joke against myself, as I do not really like the action genre either. Enjoy a good French film if I am feeling alert enough to follow the subtitles for a couple of hours. Enjoy the old English films of the 40s 50s and 60s too. Fine set of actors we had in those days.
