Players Hoping for International Places
Players Hoping for International Places

Town's various internationals will be hoping that they get places in their sides this weekend with the U21 games up first this evening. Sean Friars is set to captain the Northern Ireland side while Titus Bramble is likley to get a recall to the England equivalent.

Tutus missed out on England's last game, but they lost 4-0 so a strengthening of the defence looks like a priority for Howard Wilkinson. The Town player said: "I have trained really hard and hope I get the chance to make amends after not doing well against Finland last time."

Mark Burchill will hope to be in the Scots' U21 side which will meet Belgium.

As for the full sides Richard Wright will probably hope he gets a place on the bench as a start looks pretty unlikely. However, Sven-Goran Eriksson has said that there is little between any of his keepers and so a second cap at some point soon does seem likely.

Northern Ireland manager Sammy McIlroy is due to confirm Jim Magilton's captaincy today if the Town midfielder has recovered from a groin injury. Magilton has captained his country three times before and each time they've lost. Magilton said: "I'm just delighted to be captain. It's a great honour and it will be a very special day for me."

Hermann Hreidarsson's Iceland side play Bulgaria in Sofia on Saturday evening in a game refereed by English ref Mike Riley. The Icelander is a regular in his nation's side and even captained them recently.

Matt Holland's Ireland side play in Nicosia against Cyprus tomorrow evening. Matt was down to start the recent friendly with Denmark which was called off due to snow, but a place on the bench tomorrow seems more likely for the Town skipper.

Manu Thetis has been taken on by Sheffield United on a non-contract basis. The former Town defender is by no means fully fit at the moment and Neil Warnock hasn't been able to assess the Frenchman's abilities properly.

He is on a 'pay if you play' contract and will be looking to get himself sorted with the Blades for next season. Earlier in the week Warnock said of the Frenchman: "I may still take Thetis on a non-contract basis just to help us out for a few weeks. He's not quite fit yet but if he stays around, as I think he wants to, we can help him get there and monitor him further."
