Town have named former Tottenham, Charlton and Manchester City left-back Ben Thatcher in the side for tonight's game at Cliftonville. The 32-year-old was released by the Addicks at the end of the season and has joined the Blues on trial.

Boss Jim Magilton told the club site: "Ben is a proven player at the top level and we are well aware of his quality.

"We are taking the opportunity to look at each other over the next few days and then both Ben and ourselves will make a decision as to whether we want to move things forward."

Thatcher, 5ft 10in tall, started his career with Millwall, before moving on to Wimbledon, Tottenham, Leicester, Manchester City and finally Charlton. The Swindon-born defender won four U21 caps with England but represented Wales at full level, making seven appearances.

Town have named their side for tonight's game with Jaime Peters at right-back, where he was used in Friday's friendly with Brentford, Gareth McAuley and Tommy Smith at centre-half and Thatcher on the left.

In midfield, Danny Haynes is on the right, Velice Sumulikoski and Liam Trotter in the centre and Gary Roberts on the left. Alan Lee and Jordan Rhodes are up front.
