Blues Among Clubs Linked With League One Striker
Friday, 27th Mar 2026 18:39

Town are reported to be among a number of Championship sides keeping tabs on Huddersfield striker Joe Taylor, who is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic.

According to Football Insider, the Blues and Stoke are two of the clubs set to watch the 23-year-old in action for the Latics against Reading this weekend. Preston North End and Oxford United have previously been linked.

Taylor has scored nine times in 11 League One starts and two sub appearances since making his loan move across the Pennines in January.

Having joined Huddersfield in January 2025 from Luton, after previous spells on loan at Colchester and Lincoln, Taylor scored only six goals in 13 League One starts and 21 sub appearance.

Terriers manager Liam Manning, who since has gone on compassionate leave, recently expressed his frustration that Taylor had been allowed to go out on loan before his appointment.

“I'm really pleased for him, first and foremost, to go out and to do what he's done,” he told the Yorkshire Post.

“For us, it's a real frustration that we haven't got him. There's an element of a positive side where he's doing well, but he's ours in the future still.

“I think, for any front player, when they're scoring goals, they're at their most confident. I hope he does well for him personally, but also for us when he comes back in the summer.”

Taylor, who was a youth player with Norwich before moving on to King’s Lynn, Wroxham (loan) and then hometown club Peterborough, prior to joining Luton in January 2023.

Can't complain about his goal record this season. 13 in league matches only for a combination of Wigan and Huddersfield, and 1,605 minutes precisely spent actually on the pitch, which is pretty impressive. A stats site that I regularly use for things like this, has a summing up of a players particular strengths and weaknesses from appearances made over the past 2 seasons. He has one noted strength which is " Long shots ", and 3 noted weaknesses, one noted as very weak which is " Passing ", the other two being " Holding onto the ball and Defensive contribution ". Make of it all what you will. It may be a case of being deemed in some quarters, not better than we already have, I'm sure I've heard that somewhere before!

Well said Saxon I’ve never been so embarrassed by some of the fans and Phil tbh. Also we had 10 youth players on international duty this week. I’d rather hear about that than politics

Just my attempt at a bit of humour, lighten the mood a little! Regarding this fella, maybe if we're still a championship club next season?

Next season I hope we correct this repeated failing in not having a strong enough striker dept. Azon will go and we need another 2 or 3 (see Coventry) with one being below Hirst and one def ahead of Hirst. This would be the former if it is actually something more than a rumour!

Portman Terrorist, If and I say if we make the PL, I wouldn't expect either of the above to be here on form shown this season. IA still has potential for improvement, whether there's enough of that is another matter. First things first, we have to get there.

If we want to be a future Premier league club we have to show much more ambition than this. If Hirst and Azon were playing in league one they would be just as impressive and we would looking at them. Until we get a much better recruitment set up we are always going to be a good championship club which doesn't me because i love championship football. We all know the Sky league as i call it is corrupt and officials favour the big clubs. Manchester city have 115 charges against them but the league are frightened to dock them points because they have so much money they will just keep appealing. What will happen they will be a cop out and they will just get a fine.

Linkboy13, agree with that largely. There's no way on this planet GH and IA are anything near what would be required in the PL. IA still has improvement in him, but whether that's enough is a doubt, for sure. As for Taylor, well the same age as IA, and not much experience above League one.

Unlike you, I do not love Championship football, if that's even what you could call it at times. Having said that, there's a fair bit that's wrong with the PL too. One of which you've highlighted, to which I'd add VAR ( Very Annoying Replays ), and of course the numpty's that run it, to which you could add the same for the EFL, neither have a clue.

Well, at least one of us will get what we wish for at some point in May. I fear if it's another season booked in the Championship, heads will be rolling at PR and rightly so, as far as I'm concerned it would be nowhere near good enough. Cue cries of " entitlement " from the brigade that doesn't even know the difference in the meaning of the words " Entitlement and Expectation " !

9 goals in 11+2 subs in L1 current form is impressive, so not surprised he's caught the eye, but at 23 are we the club to give him the chance to step up & is he any better than what we have?
Wider stats were 22 games without scoring last time in the Champ for Luton & Peterborough in the 22-23 season, & L1 lifetime is a more impressive 25 goals in 75. L2 is 11 in 25.
Not convinced he isn't another one season wonder or just found his level/ squad/ position. We've taken too many chances on players that came to us after being on fire in previous seasons that haven't carried that form through.
On the flip side, we've had Morsy, Chaplin, Hladky, Burgess, Aluko, Walton, Celina and Burns who've all improved at ITFC.

Oh, wait, Paul Cook signed those.

Maybe we need Cook on the recruitment team to support McKenna?
