Boss Jim Magilton felt his side should have taken three points and not one from their trip to Southampton on Wednesday. The Town manager was unhappy with both goals conceded by his team.

Magilton said: "We made a sluggish start and it was a poor first goal to give away. The lad was fully entitled to have a shot from there – the ball came through bodies on a slippery surface.

"But we had some wonderful opportunities, managed to get back in the game and it was probably even-stevens at half-time.

"After the break we showed more urgency and managed to score a terrific, fantastic second goal. From there on the game should have been dead and buried.”

The Town boss was particularly displeased with the second Southampton goal: "Their equaliser was a catastrophic goal to give away – a real gift – and it was disappointing because we had enough experienced players in the side to kill the game off.

"We made changes but gave them time on the ball and didn't really have that quality that was necessary at the vital moments, like in the final third.

"It's disappointing but still an away point in the bank and we'll take the positives to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.”

Southampton head coach Jan Poortvliet was pleased with the draw: "After the game you have to be happy with the point because in the second half we weren't particularly good.

"We made a very good start and we deserved our goal, but then I hoped we would play well and go on, but they equalised. That was a shame because we gave it away, but that is football.

"Then we were out of the game - there was no movement any more, no belief. You see the things going wrong and we tried to do things at half-time to push them on and motivate them, but we didn't start well and didn't believe in it.

"We had a goal against us because we lost the ball too easily and then we had to make three changes to push it a little bit and the boys that came on tried to do that.

"For five or ten minutes we had the game in our hands, but in the end we were happy with the point and now we have to build on it on Saturday against Barnsley and do a bit better."
