McKenna: Few Strikers Better Value Than Hirst
Thursday, 19th Feb 2026 15:50

Town boss Kieran McKenna says few £1 million strikers in the current era have been better value than George Hirst and believes the Blues will need the Scotland international, under fire from sections of the club’s support of late, between now and the end of the season.

Hirst, a member of the League One and Championship promotion squads having signed from Leicester initially on loan in January 2023 before the deal was made permanent the following summer, is on an eight-game run without a goal and admitted after the Wrexham match that it was “playing on his mind”.

Manager McKenna named Hirst as his captain for the FA Cup tie at the Racecourse Ground last Friday and reiterated his faith in the 27-year-old at this afternoon’s pre-match press conference ahead of the return visit to North Wales in the Championship on Saturday.

“He trained really well today,” McKenna said. “I’ve spoken a few times about how important George is to us, what I think his role at the club has been and still is now.

“For me, if we take a step back, he’s a player that we signed for circa-£1 million in League One at a time when he was really early in his career and he wasn’t getting the minutes [on loan] at Blackburn.

“He scored goals that got us promoted from League One, he scored goals that got us promoted from the Championship and he scored goals for the club in the Premier League, and he’s scored goals this season.

“I think in terms of output, I doubt if the club or many other clubs have had better value for a striker for a million pounds in today’s market than this club has had from George Hirst. I think he’s been an incredible player for the club.

“I think we have to really find the right balance. He was a player who has come through that journey with the club and was the first one to want to sign [a new contract] in the summer, wanted to stay no matter what.

“He didn’t have his shirt last year, Liam [Delap] came in and did really well, [but George has] has always wanted to be here, has wanted to stay through being a starter and not being a starter.

“He has had a real passion to play for the club, has loved playing here and has had good season after good season after good season for us.

“I think he’s had some good periods this season. I think the last run of games, maybe the last month or so just before his injury, maybe just after his injury, he hasn’t perhaps hit his top form, but I think he’s a player who deserves our respect, deserves our support.

“Of course, it’s about what you do in here now, not what we’ve done previously. That’s the same for George, any other player, as myself, as any staff member. I know in the modern world, it’s about what you’re doing now, but what I see George doing now is working really hard every day, working for the team in every game

“There’s never been a striker, there’s never been a player who has had a career where every single period is up, up, up. He’s said himself he’s maybe in his first or his biggest dip period in terms of his goalscoring and a couple of other aspects, but he’s been a tremendous player for the club.

“He’s been voted by his peers into the leadership group this season. He trains well every day and gives his all in the pitch and, of course, you always want to play at your absolute best. And if you’re a goalscorer like George, you always want to be scoring in every game, but it’s inevitable you’re going to have a period not like that.

“And for me, he still deserves the support and the respect because of what he gives us every day, but also for the player that he’s been for the football club over the last few seasons. So he certainly has made backing.

“He’s really keen to do well and help the team in every way possible, and we’re going to need him between now and the end of the season for sure.”

McKenna was asked whether when a player is in form and then has a spell out injured it’s difficult to get back to the same level immediately.

“I think in George’s case,” McKenna started before reflecting. “Look, this is not to talk loads about George because there’s lots of players in any period of the season who want to be doing better or not, but I think he got injured in the Sheffield Wednesday game, he scored in one or two games before that, he scored against Coventry and had a really good impact in a massive game for us.

“I think he’s missed a few weeks over the Christmas period, which can upset your rhythm a little bit, take a little bit more time to get back into the flow and that’s the case for any player.”

Hirst is the latest Town player to have suffered abuse from a section of the club’s support on social media and McKenna was asked whether the squad is given guidance on that front.

“It’s something we speak with the group about in pre-season and at different stages of the season,” he added.

“There are always going to be narratives from outside, there’s always going to be opinions from the outside and as a group you can’t get swayed by that.

“Staying strong in those periods and staying together in those periods, we speak about that a lot.

“In terms of on an individual basis, we advise the players and we speak to them about those things and it’s a really important topic in modern society, certainly in modern football and it’s important for this club and this group right now.

“But there are no particular rules or anything like that, there are just ways that you try and support each individual and messages that we give to the group all the time.”

"Hirst is the latest Town player to have suffered abuse from a section of the club’s support on social media"

Pretty damning of those sections of our 'support' that this sort of thing happens at all tbh. Hirst is having a tough season, no doubt about it, but our own support giving him abuse is piss poor.

Yes, of course we should give Hirst our respect and support. While I hoped we would sign a new number 9 to strengthen our squad, it is not George's fault that we did not and he is clearly trying his best. Let's get behind him.

Considering he cost us £1.5m four years? ago, of course hes " value for money". current transfer market bares no resemblance to the one 4 years ago....

Once much was expected of ITFC by Supporters in terms of success, now far too many supporters are obviously willing fo accept far less. Support HAS changed from the days of 78 - 81 for sure.
The key question is ? - How long will the Club Owners accept the situation of throwing Cup games, etc; - as long as the punters keep filling the ground I guess, is the answer - but we will see - Will it continue ??

Of course, no player should be getting abuse from the fans but constructive criticism is fine. I think even George would admit that he’s not been good enough this season and we need to see drastic improvement from him in the upcoming games.

Hirst is Ploughing a Lone Furrow - and that is not his game strength.
Another ITFC victim unfortunately ….. of either not being played to individual strengths, or out of position.
Now don’t say we do not see that ….. !!!

I’d like to offer my services to the club as a speaker on the subject of social media and the web in general. I would tell all the players to take precisely zero notice of what anybody might say about them on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or even TWTD. Because we’ve arrived at a point now where the actual majority of it is complete garbage. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, of course. But some people churn out their poisonous negativity over and over like commission-only employees in a KGB troll factory.

Social media is toxic. I do hope Hirst finds some form. Same with Egeli. Get behind the manager and get behind the players. Anyone who feels the need to moan, just take a moment to remember where we were 5 years ago.

Sorry bluesnightorg - marked you down by mistake! Couldn’t agree more with your comment.

I fully back Hirst. The way we play means the no9 has never been the main goal source and as McK said very few strikers go through their career without dips. Whatever the anxiety he is having over the goal drought, abuse from the fans will not help. Over his time here Hirst has done well and I’m not writing him off at all. He runs himself into the ground every game and so clearly it’s not about lack of effort and we’ve seen enough to know it’s not lack of ability at this level.

No doubt that George has been great value for the price of his transfer fee and should not be getting personal abuse for the clubs failure to upgrade in his position over the last 3 transfer windows. Particularly from the sick individuals who choose to comments abuse under the clubs social media posts wishing him a happy birthday.
I'm not normally one to criticise McKenna or Ashton but I am baffled why the club who have spent £80m on 6 wingers over the last 4 windows haven't felt fit to invest £10 -£15m in a higher championship / lower PL striker to replace Delap and take some of the pressure off Hirst's shoulders.

Strong opinion about a player or the manager is one thing but abuse is another. Of course we have expectations of where we want to be and have criticisms but when they are voiced in abusive words and tone then that is the wrong side of the line. As for KMcK’s words about Hirst, they are balanced and realistic and what I would expect from a man who has integrity and knows how to manage his players.

Yes everyone is entitled to their opinions. Yes George is going through a patch of poor form. No it’s not acceptable, not productive and certainly not helping when some individuals shout abusive comments towards George during a match. I doubt very much he takes any real notice of them, as judging by the language often used, he realises that they possess a total lack of intellect, bringing into question as to whether their opinions are actually worth much anyway.

I wanted ITFC to bring in a CF during the window, but only to cover for George whilst he regains his form, which i’m convinced he will. McKenna is right, his form in the past has been perfectly good enough for this division, give the support he needs.

Stating an opinion is one thing. Deliberately abusing a player on social media is quite another. The latter is completely unacceptable, regardless of whether it’s at our club or any other club for that matter.

Social media provides among some things an outlet for those to express their own short comings by criticising others. You only need look across the pond to see how pathetic people look when they just post abuse to cover up what an orange moron they are.

Most of us have a had a say on the striker situation, one way or another. There is one thing for sure, no player should be on the end of outright, nasty online abuse, especially one of our own, whatever the circumstances. It's not only GH that's had it of course. I rarely go on social media to post things, and certainly nothing to do with football on the very few occasions I do. I stick to any opinions I might have being aired here, and the forum.

I was banging the drum for a new striker all through the window. It didn't happen, it's not Georges fault. I think the best we can all do, whatever our personal opinions, is get behind everyone, not just GH, for the 16 game mini season that is left. See where it takes us, and any recriminations that may be due, can wait till then.

We are allowed to give criticism mckenna . Not abuse . Tbh hirst has never scored more than 10 goals in 1 season . Id say 1 million is probably about right for him . Not extremely good value . Just the right price for him .
I understand your trying to defend the player but it also comes across like your a bit stupid. Fans can see the faults.
Hes a low to mid championship player thats all . Bang avarage player in championship

I haven't posted on singke abusive comment about GH but those that are suggesting TWTD must continue to be a safe place for supporters to air their opinions on the club, the manager, natch performances and players form, attributes and match performances. I don't have twitter, facebook, tick tock and in the stadium I'm either xheering or silent. Nobody should conflate the issues McKenna refers to with anyone on TWTD expressing opinions about whi should be in the line up for Wrexham. We have our fair share if bulkies on here and they want only their opinions discussed. This is not an echo chamber. My viiew is that GH remains our best number 9 but others may disagree

As usual, the idiots on here can’t see themselves (and the other channels the choose to participate on). Those calling Hirst ‘bang average’ or citing entitlement to publishing their negativ view… you’ll never change and you’re everything that’s wrong with football and social media. Those who offer ‘constructive criticism’, will you have ever taken that from someone who doesn’t do your job or walk in your shoes?

Lest I remind you of when footballers go on social media and speak their mind in defending themselves that they’re hauled in front of the public and reminded of their responsibilities as role models. We’re all role models to a greater or lesser degree.

Take a look at yourselves and stop justifying your negatively impactful words. Start finding way to galvanise the team you support. Bored of your negative nonsense.

My bang avarage championship striker comment isnt degrading . Its me saying hes just an avarage championship striker . In real terms . Hes a unbelievable talent in football terms hes like a top0.5% of footballers that have made it .

Hes just not what we need now. We need that next level. Look at wright at cov scored 13 goals . Hes on track to hit 20
Hirst is on track to hit 12 at most . Thats what a call an avarage championship striker .

Jugsy added 20:58 - Feb 19
oioihardy - what excellent clarity… we get it, you don’t think he’s good enough. Goalkeepers are measured in clean sheets, strikers are measured in goals… the rest don’t do anything, right? It’s that simple.

Hirst has been a real servant, part of an epic journey. But as soon as there’s a wobble, he gets cooked. He deserves better. Am I happy with current form? Nope. But I don’t believe slating him helps. He’s not playing the way we know he can. And that tells me he’ll come good because we’ve seen it before.

oioihardy added 21:59 - Feb 19
Ye sure jugsy . Sure thing . If thats what you want to believe. Matasiwa is a unbelievable cdm for championship. But hey like you said I dont see anything but goals or clean sheets so ye dont worry about that . Wes burns energy and pace and strecting the pitch is so much more than what walle does . But hey again burns doesnt always get goals or assists so I NEVER see that

And hirst can be a quality part of the journey but some players reach a ceiling.
Look at jackson , chaplin , morsy , luongo etc . They all have a ceiling. And we have reached hirsts . Hes never hit more than 10 goals in 1 season . That says it all. We need more than that now . Unfortunately the club havent helped though by not bringing anyone else in
