Keane: You Won't Play for Me Again
Keane: You Won't Play for Me Again
Monday, 24th Aug 2009 12:59

Boss Roy Keane says that some of the players who featured for the Blues at the weekend are unlikely to play for the club again. The Town manager says he hopes to have a busy week on the transfer front with several players coming in, but departures are also very much on the cards.

Keane said: “There are certainly one or two players from the weekend who are unlikely to play for me again. And I’ve told them that.

“I’m still learning about these players, but eventually you have to make a decision about one or two and say ‘I don’t like what I’m seeing’. That’s not just on Saturday’s game, but the end of last season and pre-season as well.

“You can’t keep waiting on people, you have to say that enough’s enough. I’m not saying they’re not good players, they’re just not doing the business for me.”

Keane says his task at Town at present is not so much about getting promoted as bagging the first league win of the season: "It's my biggest challenge because it's the next one. In your career, as in life, you face different hurdles and we have a big one ahead.

"The next challenge for us is not getting promoted, it's about getting some wins under our belts and if we do that, the rest will take care of itself.

"I was thinking about what we face over the weekend and I'm looking forward to it definitely. I'm relishing the challenge ahead.

"The problem has been for us that we have had to deal with high expectations since we have been back and I've played a part in that. I'm an ambitious person and have talked about taking the team to promotion.

"We have to deal with those expectations, but as bad as results have been, I think we are two or three players away from being a decent side and being back in the mix."

Meanwhile, we understand that Alex Bruce will again be captain when the Blues take on Peterborough in the Carling Cup tomorrow and may continue in the role for the rest of the season.

Why has Keane singled out the players that performed so badly on Saturday, when the players from the previous 3 games perfomed no better? Delaney for instance has been by far our worst performer this season, so has Keane got the balls to get shot of him? I doubt it. Neither presumably will Keane admit that Healy is way out of his depth and Lee Martin is no better than Luke Chadwick.

Some of Keane's behaviour reminds me of Brian Clough. No surprise there as Keane played for Clough and admired him. The thing about Clough was that he was brilliant yet unstable. Sadly, I'm beginning to wonder if Keane is just unstable, and if Keane does show Garvan the door, we'll have all the evidence needed to have him certified as a complete nutcase.

You can't rock the boat without making waves. Tough times call for tough measures, I'm just a bit surprised it has come this early on. Question is, what kind of money are we going to have available to usher in new players because the likes of Garvin, Trotter, Stead or whoever Keane gets rid off ain't exactly gonna raise all that many funds.

I still think Keane should walk. I've turned against him completely and agree with what somebody else said on here that ITFC is for gentlemen not hot-headed, headline-grabbers. Sod off back to Manchester!

I have faith that RK will get this sorted and by Christmas all the doubters will be lining up to tickle his balls and kissing his a@se!!

Whats the worst thing that can happen? Col U and Norwich wave at us as we swap places............... I'm pretty sure that won't happen, but it has crossed my mind!!

Up the Town

Obvious to me: GARVAN and STEAD. I don't agree with the former - Keane can't expect him to be completely on the pace for his first start of the season - needs a run under Keane to make the decision. But, looks like the decision has already been made

If RK has told these players, and then makes statement telling us he has ,he may as well name them and end speculation ,!

GlenPennyfather, you've got to remember Keane sees him in training and if Garvan wanted to earn a start it was up to him to impress with his attitude and application on the training pitch. Clearly he hasn't done that.

I really don't see all the hype about the lad to be honest. Yes, a very promising season a few years back - but what has he honestly done since then?

Forget he came through our academy for a second and just imagine he was signed at the beginning of last season along with the likes of Stead and Thatcher. Everyone would be slating him!

The point is we can't have mediocre players getting in the team purely on reputation, so great shout by Keane if Garvan really is being shown the door.

i'm with Dobbie on this. Over the years i've argued in support of Garven because i believed he had talent, good left boot and good passer and scorer of some quality goals (thats more than some!). But he doesnt relish a battle or dominate the midfield. His tackles are poor and heading non existant so for me he tends to watch the play and wait for the ball to turn up. He gallops rather than runs so is useless in breakaways at either end. Sadly i feel he's lost interest again, even though he could have used RK as a new start with sympathetic boss. He's gone but who else? Neither Delany nor McAuley played unless he's referring to the whole squad! Trotter doesnt look good so i feel he's next but there maybe other surprises. Maybe some have made it clear to RK that they want out!!

also...can't quite understand why we got rid of 2 quite decent left backs in Matt Richards (last game played in 3-0 win vs cardiff) & Dan Harding (last game 4-1 win vs palace)...????...now we're stuck with Delaney & Thatcher!

this is exactly what we need, jim was to chummy, hes getting rid deadwood and thats what all promoted clubs do, this is the start of an era, as for the players i can see it being trotter and garvan or trotter and mcauley to be honest, couldnt see him dropping one of his signings

Interesting comments - no mention of "never playing for him again". Do we think certain journos are trying to stir things up?

Who ever goes we need a creative midfielder, think this was the most worrying thing about the palace game especially, seems we are missing Norris alot, would love gio back!

"Keano has inherited a squad that quite honestly he owes nothing to"

This is a fantastic point Dobbie and one I forgot. Most of these players mean nothing to him as he has never worked with them before or met them. He also said he wasn't going to be a friend or too close to them. He has no sentiment he just wants a team of winners, he doesn't care if he has to get rid of fan favourites or players who have been here for years or players who bleed blue and white. If they aren't good enough in his eyes they are gone. The only one of our players he seems to have taken a shine to is Wickham and arguably R.Wright/Bruce!

Garvan must be one of them. Turned into bit of an enigma over the last couple of seasons; so much potential, blah, blah, blah. The lad does have talent but is just unable to stamp his authority in any game and if you are labled the "creative play maker" then you have to be wanting the ball and pulling the strings i.e. Jim Magilton but Owen just goes missing time & time again. A real shame cause I thought he would go all the way but he has definately gone backwards over the last couple of years and it wasnt so long ago he too fell out of love with the game and was poised to pack it all in.

i know keane has only just signed him but surely delaney has to go now i know we have only just signed him but keane seems like a manager that is willing to admit when he has made a mistake....... no wonder QPR were laughing when we gave them 750,000 for him!!!! cant pass, cant shoot, can barely tackle and certainly cant run!!!!!

its taken a few games that keane can fully judge what he has at his disposal and results plainly show its not good enough. garvan was the main hope from the youth cup side but, whilst clearly talented, he doesnt seem to be able to produce at this level on a regular basis.we need leaders on the pitch and only seem to have bruce wright and quinn who are leaders. we have too trust keano although getting in who he wants may prove difficult. whatever happens we need 2 change the side as its not working. people saying priskin should go surprises me because he's had sweet f.a chances created for him in the matches so far. an interesting few days ahead i reckon!

Well now, I wonder how many of us had this in the script after the first 4 games??!!! Whatever your view, you have to say this is fascinating, riveting stuff. I would LOVE to know what Marcus evans is thinking. Put yourself in his shoes, here you are , you've hitched your wagon to this mega high profile but unpredictable figure, given him the complete control over playing matters he asked for, let him spend about £4mn of your money and then within 4 games , the team is in the bottom 3, the captain has been dropped and he's saying some players will never play for the club again!!!

So, is this decisive leadership necessary to cut out the cancer of mediocirity from the club and dismantle something so that a completely new platform can be build or the flailing actions of a flawed madman who is about to take us to hell in a hand basket. I have no idea which but there is just no in between with this guy, no middle ground, no soft compromises and for that alone you have to have a bit of respect even if you are deeply troubled by how it all is going to play out ( as I think we all are to be honest).

It all makes for compelling almost car crash viewing. The reality is that its too late to turn back or to say , no that's not what we had in mind. When we said that the only thing life under keane was not going to be it was boring, this is what we had no ideas it meant!! So guys, buckle up again, hold tight , cheer whoever gets sent out next Saturday and pray, just pray......

ps and if it is Garvan and Trotter, anyone like to try and pick a 4 man midfield for tomorrow???!!!

Bring in new players some of them have had too much time to perform otherwise will end up same as we was last season. Now Keano has realised that we do need change.
Have faith in Keano he is the boy as Sunderland were bottom last season and won the league the same season. Bringing in Sol Campbell would be good, keep Garvan he is a creative midfielder. We definately need someone decent to partner him in midfield and a striker that will bang in 20 goals a season cos we haven't had a consistant goal scorer since David Johnson and Marcus Stewart. How about Niiklas Bendtner on loan? as he helped Birmingham into premiership with goals.
