Peterborough Chasing McAuley? Friday, 9th Oct 2009 08:41 Peterborough United are interested in signing Town central defender Gareth McAuley on loan, according to one of this morning's tabloids. The Northern Irishman recently revealed that he had been told he could leave the club. Town are known to be looking for a loan central defender themselves, with McAuley likely to be the man to make way when the new man comes in. Peterborough have confirmed that they are chasing a central defender, however, comments made by director of football Barry Fry earlier in the week suggest that McAuley isn’t their number one target: "There is definitely a chance we could have a defender in the squad before our next match. "It's a player the manager made his major target in the summer, but for one reason or another we weren't able to complete a deal. "We have an agreement in place with the player, but the club are keen on tying the lad to a new contract before they allow him to go on loan." Town have no plans for former skipper McAuley to sign a new deal, so he is not the player Fry is talking about, although it’s possible that the 29-year-old could be seen as an alternative or additional signing.
