Keane Closing in On Loanee as Lisbie Set to Return from Colchester
Keane Closing in On Loanee as Lisbie Set to Return from Colchester
Friday, 16th Oct 2009 10:34

Boss Roy Keane says he could add another loan player to his squad in the next few days and will recall striker Kevin Lisbie from his spell at Colchester in January. Keane has been searching for two loan players in addition to keeper Asmir Begovic, who signed a three-month deal from Portsmouth yesterday.

The Blues boss says his search for outfield loanees is starting to come to fruition: “There are one or two areas where we’re trying [to bring in loan players].

"I had a conversation with a manager last night and I think we could be near a deal today for a player to come into the club over the next few days, but obviously not in time for tomorrow. There’s still a bit of wheeling and dealing to be done.”

Keane was unwilling to reveal the position of the potential signing, but a centre-half looks to be a priority, while an additional striker also appears to be in the Town management’s plans.

One frontman who will be back at Portman Road is Kevin Lisbie, who Keane says he will recall early from his season-long loan at Colchester United, invoking a clause in the deal which allows his return in January.

Lisbie, 31 tomorrow, was recently quoted saying that he would not be returning to Portman Road, but Keane says otherwise: “We’ve got a call-back in January and he’ll be coming back in January because we’ve had plenty of enquiries for him.

“He had a chance to go on loan, fancied it and that was it, but he’ll be back here in January, whether he likes it or not.”

Town have received interest from clubs who want to sign Lisbie on a permanent basis, potential moves which will be put to the Londoner on his return: “Ultimately it comes down to the player, it doesn’t matter what we might think. If the player wants to go, he goes, if he doesn’t, he doesn’t.”

Keane says there has been some interest in taking other members of his squad on loan, but nothing solid: “We’ve had one or two phonecalls, but plenty of phonecalls go on between managers and from scouts and to my staff, but there’s nothing likely to happen over the next few days.

“If I manage to get one or two players that I’m after, then that would open the door for one or two others [to go out on loan].”

There is a lot of concerning stuff in the media and from direct quotes about Keane's man management style, the Lisbie comments being the latest. A squad with reasonable talent and £8m invested is bottom of the league, and it is fair to suggest that Keane's management could be the reason. The two home games are crucial, but if the team does not win then we really will have to ask whether they are playing for their manager.

Yet another load of rubbish comments from people on here. Let the man get on with his job, give him a go and put your knives back in their holders. He is the manager, he is doing what he sees as best.

Dobbie, that is a good and well reasoned defence of RK and I take on board (and agree with many of your points). I certainly have wholehearted support for the team and once a player pulls on that blue shirt he gets my full backing.

I don't however feel the same about the manager and whilst I had similar feelings when John Duncan and Mick McGiven were in charge (the latter albeit in a kind of half-hearted puppet like fashion), it is something I have only realised over the past two years as my support for Jim waned and then the same happened in terms of my support for RK.

I believe that as fans we can genuinely make a difference to the performance of the team through our support. I don't believe the same can be said of the manager, nor do I believe that a lack of support for the manager translates as a lack of support for the club (certainly not to the extent that a lack of support for the team does anyway). I think the manager largely dictates his own destiny in buying players, picking the team and setting out the formation. It is difficult to argue that this team isn't now RK's and results speak for themselves in terms of both points on the board and the style of play. If we played decent football I think I would be more inclined to offer him my support (for what it is worth!), but the cold hard fact is we don't.

The club itself has changed (for better or worse) and whilst there is a strong argument that we have never been a sacking club, we have also never been a club with money nor a club with a 'corporate' type culture. Perhaps we have to accept things will never be the same, whether that means sacking managers early, not playing decent football or not being the friendly family club we once were.

Regardless, it is nice to have some reasoned debate on here for once rather than people with differing viewpoints simply slagging each other off!

Dobie - Sensible comments as usual from you. Positivity does exist on TWTD, although it seems very diluted by the negative drivel by some so called supporters.

Come on you blues.

I agree Borge - nice to have a sensible debate! I understand your points about the performances on the pitch and accept that Keano has to take some responsibility. I think where we differ is that I think it WILL improve, but maybe you think it won't. Whatever happens, I think the next 2 games are key - both at home, and both 'winnable'. And we have to win them both, or at the very least get a minimum of 9 points from the next 4 games.

Good point on the change in the club structure - maybe there is no longer an 'Ipswich way' of doing things here, with a businesslike corporate boardroom finally replacing the 'gentleman' culture started by the Cobbolds and continued to a certain extent under Sheepshanks.

Lots more changes to come I think - seems we may have a bumpy road ahead, eh?

Borge - I don't include you in my previous post. I agree, a reasoned debate is very worthwhile and refreshing from the short-sighted people who just post KEANE OUT messages or call him an idiot. An idiot he most definately is not!

Am with you Dobbie - I think things will improve, hopefully with 7-9 points from the next 3 games!

On a slightly different note what are peoples views on Liam Trotter? Although supportive (as with anyone who dons the Blue & White) i'm yet to be convinced by him and think there are better players to partner Leadbitter. He has all the attributes/physique to be solid in that position but I always tend to think he looks a little of the pace and lacks that little bit of quality. Agree with previous posts that Norris/Leadbitter should be a match for any midfield paring in the CCC when fit again.

Interested on other peoples views - it's not intended to be one of those posts slating one of our players!!!

It might seem odd on the face of it that we haven't managed to get our loanees/s in earlier during the international break. But managers will have been waiting to make sure that they're players come back in good shape, without injuries, before making decisions.
And, aside from WC play-offs, it is the last international break until the new year, isn't it?

Seems to me that RK is making a point here. Also let us not forget that Lisbie was hugely inconsistent for us last season. I saw him in front of goal away to Southampton and it was border line embarrassing for him.

He may well go on to be a 20-goal-a-season striker for another Championship club but I doubt very much that it will be in an ITFC shirt, regardless of who is at the helm.

Let's hope that tomorrow brings the team and the fans what they deserve in the form of the first win of the season! I fancy Walters in the first half in front of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand for a 'one-nil, 3-pointer, Wrighty making some top class saves' - Thriller!!

COYB - let's get going!

Franzgumm - I believe England are playing a friendly against Brazil next month, but i don't know how this will effect other countries.

One thing I would point out, is that despite not being convinced that things will pick up, I certainly hope they do! The next two games should be winable as you say, so fingers crossed.

Ref the Liam Trotter debate, I think he is one of those unfortunate players who perhaps looks slower than he actually is (almost Jason Dozzell like). I prefer him when he plays deep for the simple reason that he is one of the only players in the team who is prepared to pick the ball up deep and try and start our passing game. Regardless of how well he actually does this, this is what we need if we are to break teams down and get proper service to our frontmen.

Superblueflude - re: emergency loan. I believe there is a cut off in November when you can only sign 'keepers on loan til the transfer window opens again in Jan... Therefore the later RK leaves it, the longer an outfield player could stay... Not done the maths, but think it is technically possible to loan someone towards the cut of day and they could stay until the end of Jan. This would give RK all of Jan to offload, make space, before the loan player becomes perminent. Anyone else want to add to that??

know what you mean borge, good comparison with Dozzell - agree he is better in the deep position but still not sure he is better than what we have at our disposal. I know views on Garvan are divided - 'he can pass but can't tackle' etc etc but think he adds a little more creativity albeit at the expense of the defensive qualities needed in CM. Quinner - again jury's out for me?

Was it me or did we seem midfield heavy at one point (know Healy turned out to be a waste of money!)

Hurry back Chuck!!!!

I liked playing with Jason Dozzell..I am not convinced Trotter is that good. He seems to lack anticipation and is often found running forward to attack then back to defend with the ball being in the opposite place when he gets there. He's a big lad and could certainly blossom...but please read the game, and drive forward with the ball at your feet more please!

I'm with Dobbie on this , as usual , but how refreshing to have sensible posts on here today . I might not agree with all Borge says , but football is all about opinions and any sensible argument is always worth taking on board and he makes his points well.

I feel too many people are after RK's head......I don't think he has ever had all the crowd behind him in the way the fans gave JM their support when he started. And of course the press are loving our problems.

The team / manager need the fans right now and I still think we can come out of this mess stronger if we stick together .

Is this the place for sensible arguments - the messageboard has got silly and too personal for sensible arguments

@tommyblue...What world are you living in? Promised? There was no promise...they said they were trying to get a couple of loan players in and hopefully during the international break...wheres the Promise? Same as someone one here some time ago said we were promised a 20 goal a season striker....how can anybody promise that a striker will score 20 goals? Even if he scored that the season before there are gaurantees. I shake my head in dispair at our supporters sometimes.

Good to hear Keano's getting some more players in.

Hopefully he'll be strengthening the right areas with the right players I.e Defence and up front!!

hilarious!
Lisbie says he wont play for Town again....and Keane promptly says he will recall him in January. Cant help but think , had Lisbie just kept his mouth shut , he would probably still be playing for Col ewe in the new year!

re : Brightblue . Why is Keane not an idiot ? He has hardly shown any signs of intelligence towards ITFC since his arrival . As far as I see it , it appears he has caused unrest amongst the players, self-doubt in their own abilities , dropping key players or trying to off load them , threatening them that they are no longer wanted by him then changing his mind. I see very little "intelligence " in anything he has done ! There are those who support him with blind faith since he is our manager . I ,like many others , are disturbed by the drop in form and unrest since his arrival . We have the players but the wrong man to lead them!
