Keane Frustrated
Keane Frustrated
Saturday, 5th Dec 2009 22:20

Boss Roy Keane was hugely frustrated at Town’s failure to take their chances as their trip to Bristol City ended in a 0-0 draw. Pablo Couñago missed the most clear-cut opportunity late on after Grant Leadbitter had hit the post.

Keane said: "I'm hugely frustrated because we had a lot of good chances to win the game and that was the best.

"Pablo should have scored and with that chance coming so late on, it would have put us in a great position, but we should have been ahead at the break anyway, possibly by two goals.

"We are making progress as a team and there were a lot of positives in the performance, but we can't afford to let opponents off the hook.

"I'm happy with a lot of things, but the position we are in requires wins and we should have done better than a point today.

"Now we have a big week coming up with two games and it is essential we take our opportunities against Peterborough on Tuesday night."

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson was pleased to have got the draw with his side below par: "We're disappointed and it's a point gained with how the game went. Dean Gerken had to make some good one-on-one saves and we won't be gloating about a clean sheet.

"We got in on a couple of occasions when Danny Haynes hit the post twice but we didn't really get our game going.

"Ipswich are a difficult side to play against, hence why they've drawn so many away from home.

"We can't be ecstatic about our performance and on the day certain players didn't play that well today. There's also a certain work-rate which I expect from my players and some didn't quite reach that."

Facefacts - You're right we can't take for granted that we will take 3 points tomorrow night, however I disagree with you saying home games have been our 'achilles heel' - we've lost more games away than at home (4 away, 2 at home) and gained 9 points at home compared to 8 points away. Also we've thrown away more points away from home compared to at home. Watford and Forest (and somebody correct me if my memory has failed) are the only home games at home where we've thrown away points at the last, whereas the list of games where we've done that away is much longer - Doncaster, Sheff Utd, Barnsley and Reading. That plus Peterborough's current position and also taking in to account that they've yet to get an away win this season makes me think we are LIKELY to take 3 points tomorrow night. That being said, nothing is guaranteed in football so this is ALL just speculation until the final whistle at Portman Road tomorrow night.

I'm really pleased to see most people being optimistic about our future, after all we haven't been beaten in the last 8 games, but what worries me is our lack of scoring, we are still struggling to get goals in games we should be winning. This isn't new and was a problem last season too, we dominated teams and didn't get what we deserved.

Everyone knows I don't like Keane for many well documented reasons, he has had all summer, the transfer window, emergency loan period and all we got was Priskin, who now looks (thank God) out of the picture. We need to offload some of the so called strikers we have and bring in some new blood in the new year transfer window, but as keane has struggled to attract the right players thus far, I'm less than hopeful.

I know we're 8 games unbeaten, but we are still in the bottom three, and despite what some of you think a few wins strung together will not have us pushing for a play off place. I'm not convinced by Keane as a man or a manager and that doesn't make me or anyone else who thinks that a 'Budgie', just a realist, we are where we are & still some way off being a top Championship side.

Oh and please don't feel free to abuse me just because you disagree, after all we've still only won 2 games and it'll soon be Christmas!

devontractorboy - I will agree with you, although we're only 12 points off the play-offs anyone saying that is faaaaaaaar too ambitious. But I do think looking at where we are now and our upcoming fixtures (as well as those of our immediate table position neighbours) I think we could string a few wins that will at least take the pressure off for the time being. Personally I think we should be concentrating on getting out of the zone and aiming for a solid mid-table finish with a view to building up ourselves as a force for next season, not flying up the table to some sort of 'play-off glory' this season.

Excellent performance by the lads. Deserved to win but if anyone had offered us 4 points from Cardiff and BC away beforehand, we'd have snapped their hand off. If we continue to play like that for the rest of the season, we'll win more than we don't. Great to see Arran keeping a clean sheet and I can't think of anyone who had a off day, though you might argue Pablo and Jon Stead might have taken better options - in hindsight - on occasion. Still can't believe the referee didn't give us the time to take the final corner of the game. A draw was a great result but the game fnished in total anti-climax. A very unusual decision.
