Keane Frustrated By Another Draw
Keane Frustrated By Another Draw
Saturday, 6th Feb 2010 19:16

Boss Roy Keane was frustrated that the Blues recorded yet another draw - their 15th in the league this season - as the home game with Middlesbrough ended 1-1. However, the Town manager conceded that it was a fair result.

Keane said: "Our performances generally haven't been too bad but it's another draw and draws don't get you anywhere fast.

"When you look back at all the draws we've had we might have been better to lose half and win the other half.

"Somebody must be making money out of us by predicting draws every week and we shouldn't begrudge them that.

"But this was a typical Championship game. Both teams had chances, it finished 1-1 and we all go home. Boring."

The Blues boss felt his side needed a better final ball: "Scoring goals has been a problem for us all season.

"In the second half we got in some really good positions but we just needed the final ball. The final ball is the most important one in football.

"If you look at what happens between the two boxes we do reasonably well. But what goes on in the boxes is what life's all about.”

Keane was pleased with his two new loanees: "It was a great start for us, the perfect start and we looked comfortable for the first half.

"It was a good ball in from David and Murph did well to get on the end of it. But we needed a second goal, particularly in the Championship where teams can score from set-pieces and we saw that again today.

"Middlesbrough gave us a few scares in the second half and, after they scored, they had the momentum, so the result was probably about right.

"I was fairly pleased with our performance generally. It was a disappointing goal to concede but we defended fairly well against a decent side.

"It was a risk putting David and Murph in because they've not had a lot of football and Jon Walters, who has been out with a hamstring injury and hasn't trained much, but they came through well.

"I was delighted with the two new lads, they linked up well and their fitness levels were excellent but we have another game on Tuesday and we will have to be careful with them."

Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan also felt a draw was the correct outcome: "I thought it was a fair result. Ipswich were the better team in the first half.

"We were getting used to a right-back playing in the middle of the park and a left-back playing on the left of midfield.

"We weren't ready for that type of game, with so many new players, and it was unsettling.

"Had it been a nice simple, passing game we might have been all right and we'd have settled in but it was ferocious to start with.

"The fact we then went a goal down so early on threw the guys who were playing out of position into a bit of shock.

"But our mental strength got better as the game went on. We showed we can play but we have to learn to be more professional in the first couple of minutes.

"Sometimes when a team score early on it's a brilliant goal and you can't do anything about it.

"But with this one we were so embarrassed, down the left-sided area, that we crumbled. It took us until half-time to settle everyone down."

Where were all you negative nancies before Christmas when we were on that unbeaten run and moved up the table? Oh yea ON THE BLOODY BANDWAGON...we've moved back down again and all of a sudden the boo boys are back out again. Look at the table properly, with the tight points gap and games in hand it would be just as easy to move up to mid-table as it would be to slip back in to the drop zone. Granted we've got 4 tough away games coming up but it's not quite as dire as you all think.

Another disappointing result - having taken the lead. Had we taken all of our chances, we would have won it

Having said that, I heard some Boro supporters walking away from the match, saying exactly the same thing.....

dirtydingusmagee - What is your beef man? Did we lose? No Where we playing a good side that has recently come down from the premiership? Yes. Did Keanes new signing make an impact? Yes. So me thinks he does know what he is doing. I'm not going to hide behind the fact that things are a little dire at the moment. But if it wasn't for supporters trying to be possitive and keep a good spirit going then the atmosphere at PR would be terrible. Yes this is a site that you can air your views, but where were you when we were stringing results together. It makes me sick whether it is on a siter like this, down the boozer or at PR, whingers and moaners that only pipe up when the chips are down. You are the problem with football and in fairness life itself. Cheer up and together with support and positiveness, we can survive this season and push on next. If we do get promoted don't bother showing up to the party because they might bring the wrong sort of beer and start moaning again!

With the draw against Middlesbrough having ruined yet another weekend I to am incredibly frustrated with the team's performance and subsequently our league position this year. Now I know that some people will disagree with this but I don't believe that sacking Keane mid season after the January transfer window will help.

Whilst another home draw has left us all with that glass if half empty feeling again I'm trying really hard to take a step back from the initial emotions after the game and give it another objective look. Firstly Middlesbrough were a Premiership team last year and a draw against a team who were in the top flight last year is not the end of the world especially taken in context against our home performance earlier in the season against another of last seasons Premiership teams Newcastle. Since then our tests against last years Premiership teams WBA & Boro have now ended in draws and not defeats.

As a Town fan I wish that we could win every single game that we play but despite all my wishing that is simply never going to happen. Obviously I would have liked for us to get a win against Boro but I feel that the more crucial games coming up are those against teams in the bottom half of the table being our next four games against QPR, Peterborough, Sheffield Wednesday & Scunthorpe. As per other recent seasons the Championship is full of inconsistency with only the top three having put together decent runs. Looking at the rest of the table teams have taken points off each other in what is almost an impossible league to predict for a betting man. Taking sixth placed Leicester who are on 42 points there are only 12 points that separate them and us in 21st. If only a few of those draws could have been converted into wins and the table would be different.

However it's not but I don't believe that moaning and in fighting between fans will help the team at all. What can help is 100% support for the manager and team whoever pulls on the town shirt between now and the end of the season. We all want to see town pushing for promotion rather than in a relegation battle but looking back many people were calling for Bobby Robson to be sacked in his early days and George Burley did not achieve promotion for us in his first season in charge as after becoming manager at the end of December in 1994 we did not win promotion to the Premiership until 2000.

Whilst it can be argued that you make your own luck in football I think that earlier in the season we had more than our own fair share of bad luck. I think that this has seriously affected the player's confidence and that takes time to rebuild. When John Lyall took charge in his first season we suffered from a lot of bad luck and a pretty disappointing season but in the season after that we won promotion as Champions. Whilst there are many people out there who would rather see us sack our manager now I think that there are examples out there in football of the benefits to be had if managers are given time and not sacked in their first season. I know that a lot of people won't agree with this but with four crucial away games coming up I think that this is a time to unite and get behind the team and manager as there are enough other teams out there wanting to put us down without us contributing to our own downfall as well.

Garvan started against Cardiff away,Blackpool at home ,Coventry home ,and had a half against Blackpool away (and scored) and Qpr at home .
I dont confess to know more about management than Roy but in those games we scored 13 goals in 5 games ,how many times have we scored more than one this season where he hasnt been involved 2 ?
I know a lot will say we have also lost or drawn when he has been playing ,but we have lost and drawn an awful lot without him too
I have said for a long time the midfield of running around fast, full of commitment is not a good balance Leadbitter,Norris ,Walters and Colback all far to similar .
To me it was working with Garvan in the centre with Stead upfront why did he change it ?

Hermann_eats-puffin — you don't know what you're talking about when you compare the Roy Keane situation with Bobby Robson's early years. Bobby Robson took over a struggling team and had no money to spend so it took him time to turn things around. Roy Keane took over a top half of the table team and has spent a lot of money by Championship standards. Hardly similar circumstances.

I believe RK should be given the two years he signed up for. But in the meantime I am entitled to criticize. This is a message board for god's sake. Fans are entitled to express their views — even if it upsets some sensitive souls. I call it as I see it and these are my marks for RK's performance:

Transer market nous — FAIL
Ability to motivate his players — FAIL
Tactical ability — FAIL
Results — FAIL

I hope he turns it around. But please don't insult me by saying I'm not a real supporter just for pointing out the facts.

i reckon its the keane loyalists who have got us in this position' think about it.. they madly support keane no matter what happens on the field even they it looks like we will go down the gurgler.they demonise anyone who mentions the fact that we have spent most of the season in the relegation zone.they waffle on about how we will come good in the next game or 2 meanwhile more than half the season has gone and we are sliding down the table from a high of 3 places above the relegation zone back into the mire but everythings groovy baby.. if these deluded fools could only see what is actually happening and start complaining about it like the rest of us maybe the boss would have listened and have got us a half decent manager to save us from the drop.and at this point in the season we would'nt be up the s..t creek without the paddle.but what would i know i'm just a muppet 'a norwich fan' a whinger' a d..khead and all the other daft childish names that they hurl at anyone who dares speak the truth!

Truth? You speak about truth? I'm not a Keane loyalist I'm a TOWN loyalist. And we're known for not being like QPR or P'boro and sacking managers every 5 minutes. If we sacked Keane, who's gonna come in who'd be any better? Everyone talks about Curbs but he himself has said he doesn't want to manage outside of the Prem. P'boro sacked Ferguson and brought Cooper in - that worked really well eh? I don't think anyone here has said our current situation is 'groovy'.

obviously you have missed posts Brockley,i have not been missing [apart from a week pc was in for repair]and i dont always moan if you care to look back,] i do go to the matches, i do support the team , i pay same as anyone else to watch the games, so excuse me if i express feelings and views that may conflict with yours [and some others] .The one thing that pisses me off more the plight of the club, is the people that come on here claiming that people who have a'' moan '', dont go to matches, dont support the team or are budgies in disguise .

I said when we lost at home to Crystal Palace we would go down, and I cannot see any change to that prediction. Naaarwich went down last season with loanees and we are following the same pattern.
I go to all games home and away season ticket holder and Hartlepool away next December is looking more likely.
Under previous mangers we played football, I haven't seen much this season
