 | Forum Reply | Is Omari at 07:34 16 Aug 2025
I agree with the above and in addition when I’ve been thinking about the Omari versus others this has also entered my thinking. The fee has to be right in terms of the selling club’s valuation of the profit that they want to make. So as far as I understand it both Doak and McAtee are Liverpool and Man City youth team players respectively (I standby to be corrected if that is wrong). So in both of these cases the entire fee is pure profit for Liverpool & City so a big chunk of money into those clubs and great for PSR. For us what would have been the point in selling Omari for £25m when we bought him for £22m and we have to give Chelsea 25% of the profit in any sale. There simply wouldn’t be any incentive for Town to sell and so if a club wants to buy Omari they have to reach a fee whereby the amount of profit that Town will make in the deal is worth it compared to the loss to the team of losing that player. Therefore I think this will at least have a partial influence on any thought process. It’s along these lines why I can’t understand it if Southampton completely price Dibbling out of a move. If Dibbling refuses to play which isn’t good for the team but Southampton won’t sell because they say want £40m-£50m that seems like greed because if they sell for anywhere between £20m-£40m all of that income is pure profit because he’s a Southampton youth team player and that’s a huge amount of income to help reinvest in their team because they’d have more profit regardless of whether say the fee they get is less than for Omari. Anyway it’s a huge fee for our club plus his performances and goals helped take us to the PL so I’m grateful that it happened and onwards and upwards for Town and fingers crossed that starts on Sunday! |
 | Forum Reply | Who would you buy? at 13:31 13 Aug 2025
As a replacement for Omari I'd be trying to get Ben Doak however that might be very difficult to achieve because there are strong rumours linking him to being bought by several PL clubs. If Broadhead goes I'd consider Sarmiento on loan (especially if we could get him in for the Southampton game!). And as backup for Azor I'd be happy with Travis on loan if he was happy to come. Appreciate you can only have a max of 5 loans in a match day squad and I don't expect us to be able to get Doak on loan so if we got Sarmiento and Travis on loan that would take us to 5 with the existing loans of Cajuste, Kipre and Akpom. |
 | Forum Reply | The problem with our new recruitment model at 13:03 13 Aug 2025
Yes this has always been the model and it is important for our future that this continues. In the past it was the case such as with Dozzell to Tottenham, Kiwomya to Arsenal, Dyer to Newcastle, Wright to Arsenal as well as others and we used funds from those sales to reinvest in the team and make a better squad to push on. In the current day of PSR and mega money deals this is even more important and if we are to succeed on the pitch and financially it is actually important that as a club we are seen as a viable stepping stone. Whilst we'd all love the best talent to come to Town and see this as their final destination & therefore stay at the club for their entire career (such as we as fans would love to do if we only had the footballing talent) this is not a realistic proposition to expect footballers to actually do. Clubs such as Bournemouth are very good at doing this and for example they have made over £90m profit from their sales of Milos Kerkez, Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi this summer. Zabarnyi is being sold to PSG in a deal worth 66m euros (£57m) and Zabarnyi had joined Bournemouth for a reported £24m. Dean Huijsen joined Real Madrid for £50m and Huijsen was signed from Juventus last summer for a fee of £12.6m. Liverpool signed Milos Kerkez in a deal worth £40m and Kerkez cost a reported £15.5m from AZ Alkmaar. See this article from the BBC:- https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c1leezv2r0zo Also see this article titled "Frankfurt are about to hit profits of €345m in six years just from selling strikers – this is how they do it" but apologies as this is behind a paywall but the gist of it is they get talented young players in on the pretext of come to us play well and we won't stand in your way when you want to move on. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6508175/2025/07/23/eintracht-frankfurt-hugo-eki If we want to compete in the football business model as it currently is (and everyone can argue about whether they like it or not but you have to operate within the reality of what football currently is) we 100% have to get talented players in and be prepared to sell them within a season or two if they do well and reinvest that money in the next bright young talented players. Hopefully along that journey the players deliver on the pitch to propel the team to success and when you sell them for a profit you then buy the next player on the conveyor belt. Just don't completely fall in love with the players and don't be bitter when they leave because this has to be the business model. The problem we have at the current time is that the good players want to leave (which is what it is and you don't have to like it but if we double our money each time it's good business) but now we're a Championship club instead of a PL club it's a lot harder to attract the next player into our club to get on the production line. It's not an issue for Bournemouth because as a PL club they just have the next player lined up on the production line and they go again. Furthermore if we hold players to ransom and do not let them move onto the next step in their career that will simply put other players off from joining us. That's not something I like as a fan because in my ideal world I'd love to be playing hardball and retaining our best talent but that is simply not going to work in the game as it currently operates business wise. |

Following on from the question about clubs outside of Leagues 1 and 2 being in the EFL Trophy how do clubs from outside of the National League get into the National League Cup? As well as National League Teams in the cup you also have these teams in it. Blackburn Rovers Burnley Everton Manchester United Leicester City Nottingham Forest West Bromwich Albion Wolverhampton Wanderers Brighton & Hove Albion Fulham Southampton West Ham United Leeds United Middlesbrough Newcastle United Sunderland Now yes we can argue fundamentally whether or not teams outside of Leagues 1 and 2 should compete in the EFL Trophy and likewise whether or not teams outside of the National League should compete in the National League Cup but that decision is beyond our control. So seeing as our direct competition (and several from this season Championship) compete in these competitions surely it would do our youngsters good to do the same and get some experience. Therefore I just wondered how teams go about getting into the National League Cup? I think that there was some comment on teams getting into the EFL Trophy (I can't find the forum post now) but it was something along the lines of the top 16 PL Teams get an invitation and if they don't take it up then invitations can filter down. But I wasn't sure how teams get into the National League Cup and does anyone know? |

I also like the idea of Villa Park as well as some of the other grounds mentioned such as the city ground. Style wise I quite like Ashton Gate, Vicarage Road and Craven Cottage although at the present moment in time we'd ideally want something a bit larger capacity wise than the three of them. If talking relatively new grounds then yes already mentioned above the idea of a mini Spurs stadium is good but as an alternative, not that anyone has seen a game there yet to see what it's really like on a match day, but of the modern stadiums built in recent years I really like what I've seen so far of Everton's new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium and as has been mentioned in some other posts it's a stadium with blue seats. A draw would do nicely but if it can’t be a draw then Bournemouth to win please. |

I really don’t want to envisage a point at which McKenna is no longer Town manager because if I had my way he’d be manager for the next decade and more. But if we had to succession plan and contemplate Town post McKenna then one for my shortlist would definitely be Will Still. When reading this:- https://totalfootballanalysis.com/opinion/will-stills-managerial-style-is-bluepr Quoting from it the following is said about his teams style of play:- “Perhaps the most important facet of Still’s approach to the game is the high press. Reims are one of the most intense teams to play against in Ligue 1 right now, with Still’s demands requiring supreme fitness to keep the game in their opponents’ half for 90 minutes. Ultimately, it’s all about pulling defences apart and creating wide overloads. The relationship between winger and fullback needs to be on-point, but Reims have shown an explosiveness on numerous occasions to expose full backs and get in behind teams. Where Still’s approach differs somewhat to Kompany’s style of play is possession. It’s rare to see Reims dominate the ball for 90 minutes, instead preferring to show ingenuity on the counterattack. They’re not afraid to mix it up either, with a nice balance between tiki-taka and direct passes to keep the opposition guessing, as well as a variety of corner routines which they continue to exploit well. In terms of formations, Still has maintained a pretty consistent 4-2-3-1 for his Reims team. When they do look to play progressively through the thirds, this becomes a 4-1-2-3, as the inside forwards move forward to support the lone striker and the single anchor has two options in advance of him with two mezzala-style midfielders who look to attack the spaces left by the inside forwards.” |
