David Wright Confirms His Town Exit
David Wright Confirms His Town Exit
Thursday, 29th Apr 2010 09:14

Full-back David Wright has confirmed that he has not been offered a new contract by the Blues, as first revealed by TWTD yesterday. The former Wigan and Crewe man’s current terms are up at the end of June.

Wright, who is 30 on Saturday, said: “I saw the manager on Tuesday and he said some nice things about me, but that he was looking in a new direction. I don’t agree with his decision, but I have to respect it.”

The Warrington-born defender joined the Blues from the Latics in January 2007 and has made 125 starts and three sub appearances, scoring five goals, perhaps most notably the winner against Derby earlier in the season which brought Town their first win of the campaign.

Keeper Richard Wright is the other high profile out of contract player to be released, while Pim Balkestein and Jon Stead are also set to depart, a fee having been agreed with Coventry for the striker’s signature, although personal terms have not yet been settled. Loanee Liam Rosenior is understood not to have been offered a Town deal.

Manager Roy Keane continued to meet out of contract players yesterday to tell them their fate.

Coaches Steve Foley, Ian McParland and Chris Kiwomya are also out of contract this summer with Foley understood to be leaving the club.

Town will make official announcements on who is being kept on and who will be leaving the club on Friday.

A poor decision by Keane. David Wright has been a good servant to this club and if he had been played on the right side of the defence all season he may well have been player of the year. How much did we waste on Rosenior's wages?

David Wright is a consistant proffessional. What have we lacked this season? Yep consistancy. I fear another Keane blunder in a similar shape of the Rhodes one.

I like D. Wirght and he has done well over the years with us. But if I am truly honest he is just an average CCC full back at best, RK obviously has a plan and wants more. So cry all you want Davids gone and whether you would or you wouldn't have kept him, it what RK has decided.

When will people realise that Rhodes was gone whether Keane came or not! Rhodes did not want to stay at Ipswich.

After the way Magilton treated his dad and left him out of the squad and shipped on loan, it was always going to happen!

I hated the fact that rhodes left much like everyone else but Im afraid that one wasnt Keanes fault!

Stop filling in the gaps and just deal with the facts!

Keane's wrong. Wright's not wicked but well alright. Onwards and upwards David. You're better off away from Roy Keane's Ipswich. Come back when we become Ipswich Town again brother!!!! October is my reckoning.

As someone you has faith in what RK is doing, surprised with this, as DW is a decent enought player and a good pro. RK was quoted recently saying he was happy with him. I think it came down to discussions with SC and simple economics.

It is ok keeping young players (Smith,O'Connor, Eastman, etc) as cover players as they are on little money and have prospects of improving. I think he could have provided good cover for McAuley (assuming Bruce is leaving) but anyone who thinks he will be in demand as a FB by any top teams in the division are way off the mark, though we will still do a job for a lower to mid table team.

He had lost his place also on the Wigan team that got promoted a few years ago, and they immediately sold him.
Bardlsey would be a much stronger defender who has plenty of Premier league experience, but wouldnt be much better going forward.

I must admitt that im suprised that keane isn't keeping on either D wright or Rosenior, for me it was gonna be a straight choice between the two of them. looking at both:

D Wright has been a great servant to the club over the last 3 years or so and has been a model professional. he is dependable and better defensively than he is going forward, is versatile too which has been good, but I wouldn't go as far to say he is too spectacular.

Rosenior for me was one of the better players during our poor start, looked like he really cared when we scored goals, when we won he was prob the only 1 to applaud us the fans (all 4 stands too, not jus the Sir bobby robson stand) and he also showed jus what it meant to him when we conceded late goals and either drew or lost. he prob isn't as gd defensively as Wright but was far better going forward. not played much since the watford away game, in which he was pretty bad but then most of them were.

so who is keane going to replace them with? people say bardsley if thats the answer then im sorry its not the right one. I'd rather play Peters at right back

Another poor decision for me ,Wright has been one of our best defenders over last two seasons and we look and play a lot more confidently at the back when he is playing .His games to clean sheets and wins is probably the highest of any player at the club ,this is a personality clash rather than a footballing decision which is why he was dropped at the start of the season when we were shipping goals for fun .More than capable for this league and Peters is certainly not the answer so will 50-50 it on another Keane signing more than likely.
Good Luck David and Thankyou For Your Service

i wouldnt have any problem with keeping both rosenior and wright, dont really mind who plays but they would both back each other up pretty well....both good championship full backs, wright - versatile (very useful) scores goals (derby, first win) puts balls into the box, good defensively - rarely makes noticible errors. Rosenior, great going forward, pacey at times, again gets balls into the box...makes crucial tackles when the winger is just about to skin him and put a ball in....and clearly cares about this club where it wants to be = higher up in the table! Cares when we conceed late goals (watford at home, gave away his shirt) and clapped ALL the fans after the derby win. Why is keane so hasty in getting rid of decent players and getting in expensive ones with big egos who think they're miles better than anyone else like leadbitter.

I see it as a suprise decision but wish David Wright the best of luck & im sure a host of Championship clubs will be looking to sign him. I am very intrgued into who RK has lined up.. With getting rid of Wright & not signing Rosenior. Interesting times ahead..

disappointing, a good player to have for back-up, as he can play left and right back.

better than jamie peters...

Well Mr Keane another one of your mistifying decisions - how can ANYONE see this as being the right decisions. David Wright is a class player, and has had an excellent season, makes you wonder what this so called Manager will come up with next. Glad I haven't purchased my Season Ticket for next season, Rhodes sold, D.Wright no longer required, various wastes of space brought in at high cost and wages - sorry but I have no confidence at all in our current Manager.
I guess I won't be alone - names don't impress me unless they come up with the goods. We are heading in the wrong direction, is my believe.
Hope I'm wrong - only time will tell.

Dependable. On the whole I am not happy with this BUT I do ask how much money D. Wright must have been on. The reality is, Roy has to reduce the squad in terms on numbers AND wages, in order to spend elsewhere. As pointed out by some yesterday, Wright may have been on a lot. An expensive back-up.

Well i dont now why we all sound so suprised keane clearly has never liked him i just think keane think of the team and us (the fans) before he thinks of himself and his manergerial problems.

Strange decision given our limitations in this position currently. Must have a replacement in the bag and 100% certain?? If it was based on performance this season there are many more that would have been ahead of DW in the queue..

Disappointing that D Wright is going as he was Mr Dependable in defence and i think we will miss him. I hope Keane has a good replacement lined up or the flak will be heading his way yet again. I do wonder however if this decision is more to do with finance rather than football or personal reasons, I'm convinced ME wants the squad size reduced before he will let Keane get in the 4 or 5 "characters" he wants and whilst i'm sure there are a few under contract players he wants rid of(Pablo,Stead,Bruce,Garvan etc)getting rid of them may prove difficult for him. Therefore I think we will see most of the out of contract players(apart from O'Connor)released to cut the squad size

Im upset with this....a loyal servant to the club, a consistant performer and this is how he's treated......quite frankly we don't deserve him.

Good luck in the future, David and thanks for getting the goal which got us the first win of this dismal season :)

I dont know why anyone is surprised by this - this is just another of many poor decisions by Keane with regards to the squad in's and out's. Im so nervous as to who he is going to blow our cash on during the summer.

And lets face it, it must be a bad decision by the mighty Keane if even jas0999 isnt happy about it. I think thats the first time youve admitted to one of his many mistakes.

It's a disgrace, Wright has been one our better players in a poor season. Perhaps he is too much of a 'man' for our Manager?...gets dispatched to the youth/Res to train, but fights back to be one of our best performers...BUT always seems to be substituted, when other players (including Captain Walters) have been underachieving. Not the first bad decision by RK...how exciting it would have been to see Jordan Rhodes and Connor Wickham looking to form a partnership up front?
RK needs to get his main money buys Martin and Priskin to have confidence to play for ITFC, if Priskin can't be a star (as an International player) playing alongside a budding star in Wickham, and Martin start to stop farting about on the ball and do some damage, ie shoot or do a good cross and perhaps even a half decent tackle then we might be on the verge of ...at lease an interesting season.
