Boss Roy Keane says he’ll take in a few games at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. The Blues boss hopes defender Tommy Smith makes the final New Zealand 23 having been included in the preliminary squad of 30.

Keane, who knows New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert having worked alongside him on coaching courses, says it will be a feather in the club’s cap to have a representative in South Africa: “It’ll be great to have an Ipswich Town player at the World Cup and, please God, Tommy will be in there.

“I know he’s in the initial squad of 30, but I know that’s being cut down in the next week or two.”

A trip to the World Cup is on Keane’s summer agenda but unlike in previous close seasons the Town manager has no plans to go on any coaching courses: “I’m sick of courses, I’ve been on the best course for the last 10 months - that’s working here. In the job is the best course you can get.

“[First team coach] Tony Loughlan’s going on one or two, [fitness coach] Antonio Gomez is always doing stuff. It’s good for the staff and my staff are very open-minded and always willing to learn.

“I’ve no plans to go on any courses. I’ve had busy four or five years with different courses and hopefully I’ll be busy this summer, watching one or two matches, having a trip to the World Cup and trying to speak to one or two players [now that the season has ended].”

Fitness coach Gomez is set to run a course at El Instituto Municipal de Juegos y Deportes back in Lorca in his native Spain next month before he returns for pre-season which starts on June 28th.

jas0999 added 20:40 - May 6 I really do think some 'fans' on here may benefit from supporting a new club. If Roy is making you so unhappy that you have to post a 100% negative comment on every thread - then you may need to question whether it is actually worth the stress of supporting ITFC.

bennyblue added 22:54 - May 6 i cant believe roy is going to a world cup i thought he hated these events with all the officials flying 1st class and the poor facilities on hand for hugely egoed players.. hopefully he will stay there like that whinger at the start of this post said and town fans can get back to running down there neighbours and not some idiot manager we employed who hasnt got a clue...there i feel a lot better now i must ring all my ex wifes and ask them if they will come back..tonight i would love to go out for a beer with my mates but i dont have any because i am such 100% negative loner phsycho who cant see that roy is the best manager we ever had and town are now under him playing the most beautiful football we have ever witnessed and we are at the highest position in the league tables ever in our history because roy is such a brilliant manager. i just wish i would recover from my delusions quickly so i can see that all the losses and boring draws and bad signings and the poor table position were only in my loner canary muppet mind and in fact town are euro champions this year and roy keane has been hailed as the greatest cork man since rory gallagher who is his new assistant manager and fifa have asked him could he take over the running of there humble organisation because he is clearly the son of god and can do no wrong while he walks the earth in his human form
