The two approaches of dealing with Covid-19
at 20:18 15 May 2020

I have been investigating the Lockdown Vs Herd Immunity approaches to the pandemic.

In Ireland, because of our historical shortage of ICU beds ( approx 220 ), we had no choice but to go down the lockdown route. Sweden took the Herd Immunity approach.
https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0511/1137763-what-can-we-learn-from-swe

The jury is out on the long term outcome for the two approaches and every country has deciding factors which way to go. I have been watching the excellent FT Covid website and there is some great number crunching going on. Of course the disclaimer is 'Lies, damn lies and statistics'.

Interesting to see the death rate in the two countries ( plus UK ). I assume the jaggedness in curve is due to the smaller population ( Ireland has 1/2 population of Sweden and UK 6 times plus Sweden )

This is a cumulative chart

As an aside, Belgium is the highest on the chart and the US is below Ireland amazingly.

It's going to be very interesting to see how the graph changes with the relaxation of lockdown in the various countries.

Good to see the better off footballers putting their hands in their pockets for colleagues in a worse position.

Likewise the Premier League could throw a few bob to the lower leagues.

Just had a little browse of webcams around the world and the scarcity of people out and about is quite staggering ( I know its mainly Italy and Spain, Skyline are based in Italy ).

The Paddys are letting the side down, not a lot of social distancing going on here ( I did see one mask ).

Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all. Celebrations a bit muted this year but thats probably a good thing anyway.

O' Connell st. is a bit quiet today but thronged compared to some european cities.

Why buy players when you can buy the club? Maybe Paul could put in a good word with Dortmund.

Irelands Women's Hockey team go through to the Olympics on penalties v Canada after being 3-1 down in the shootout ( level after the two playoff games ). Last week the Mens team were 3-1 up in the shootout v Canada ( level after the two playoff games ) and failed to get through.
