Keane: Striker Target Identified
Keane: Striker Target Identified
Monday, 17th May 2010 17:47

Boss Roy Keane says he has identified a player who he feels can help end Town’s goalscoring woes. The Town manager feels this season’s lack of goals - skipper Jon Walters topped the charts with just eight - came as a shock.

Keane told the club site: "There are loads that we need to improve on, players, staff, but without doubt getting in a goalscorer or two is a priority.

"The lack of goals last season was the biggest single disappointment for me and I think it caught us all by surprise.

"In terms of a goalscorer, I have a player who I have identified as someone I feel could come in and do a good job for us and he is a realistic target.

"I'd like to get one or two positions covered pretty quickly, but I'm also aware that I need to show an element of patience. I'd like to have players in place by the time we start pre-season but lots of deals get done well into the summer, so we may have to sit tight for a while."

Scunthorpe’s Gary Hooper has been regularly linked with the Blues and several other clubs in recent weeks, while Cardiff’s Michael Chopra is also claimed to be a potential target, along with former loanee Daryl Murphy.

Keane has confirmed that he will also be looking at adding a third keeper to his squad now that Richard Wright has been released: "That's another area we have to get right. We've let Wrighty go, so we need to bring another keeper in. We used five goalkeepers last season and you're not going to get anywhere when you use those numbers."

Sunderland’s Marton Fulop is understood to be Keane’s number one goalkeeping target.

watched rhodes play for huddersfield v millwall the other day on sky - he looked rubbish, far too slow and second touch was a tackle.
charlie austin is a much better league 1 prospect.

Hahahahaha. The only tools he should blame are you pesky little twerps. He doesn't sit down and think, hm, what statement can I think of today that will be of interest to the fans because there's not much to do around here. He gets asked questions by that funny hobbit looking guy at the club and he gives answers. Some of the things he says might seem obvious and even simple to you sophisticates from the East, but I see this more as further evidence that Mr. Keane isn't particularly invested in thinking of catchy sound bites to dazzle and amaze. Shame coz that's the way of the wold tho innit?

Why was it a suprise Keane because you signed two attacking minded wingers, an attacking midfielder and a striker for over 6 million and they scored you 7 goals between them and you got rid of the only player scoring in pre season before it started and our top goalscorer halfway through who had a goal every two games started .
As for Wrighty he was out of contract so offer him a lower deal ,what better keeper to have as back up or bring the youngsters through than an Ipswich man ?

The season hasn't even started yet and already the B***S*** from the so called supporters starts, so much negativity amongest people.
I agree last season was a write off and we didn't exactly shine in the Championship but lets look at the good points,
1, A little star was found in Conner Wickham,(i believe Keano gave him his chance)
2, We had probably the worst season in about 40 years and didn't go down.
3, Without a "Goalscorer" we still finished mid table.
Just look what this season could bring if we just got behind the Manager and players instead of putting the boot in and always focusing on the bad things when things get bad.
Everyone is allowed to have there say i know that but it would be nice to read something positive on here for a change rather than how bad things are going to get next season before a ballis even kicked,
Lets face it, If there were nothing coming out of PR and all was quiet about possible transfers or targets then i think ALL the negative "Supporters" would be saying that RK wasn't doing his job and just sitting there doing nothing!!!!
I think he's in a no win situation with some people in whatever he does,

COYB........

now that Robert Koren has been released I would go for him. Watched the Slovenia team a number of times and he is a very good player, but after the world cup he might be onto bigger and better things..

All I ask of Keane is that he does his home work not like the same standard on Tamás Priskin

Comeonthegoodtimes .. i believe Magilton gave Wickham his first chance and the majority of good points from this season which dragged us to a midtable finish were Magiltons signings Walters goals,Steads goals ,Mac player of the year .
We are halfway through the Keane PR experiment and after the two years is when the proper judging can be done but at the halfway stage we have a long way to go so hopefully his signings this summer will be more sucessful than last year or he will not be in a job

Why are some people still going on about Jordan Rhodes? Has the penny not dropped? Roy said at the time he had no place in the squad for two unproven youngsters. We need an experienced forward as well a young gun. As such, Roy chose to keep Wickham. Good decision. He is now worth MILLIONS.

Rhodes has scored in the THIRD TIER of English football - would he have done it at Championship level? Would he have beaten the two best centre halves in the league to score at Cracker in front of 55,000 at Newcastle? Who knows, but Wickham DID. So can we finally stop this stupidity. Rhodes is unproven. Wickham has delivered. I can only assume the Rhodes fans failed to see the game on Saturday. Missed an absolute sitter from a few yards out. Shocking. And that was in the lower leagues!
