No Big Screen at Portman Road for USA Game
No Big Screen at Portman Road for USA Game

Town will not be showing England's World Cup match against the USA on a big screen on the practice pitch on Saturday. The organisers of the cancelled screening in Chantry Park had contacted the club, who looked into the possibility of hosting the event.

However, Town’s director of communications, Terry Baxter, told the club site that it hasn’t been possible to make the arrangements in time: "We were approached earlier this week to see if Saturday's World Cup screening could be held here on our practice pitch.

“After a number of meetings with the various agencies and authorities involved, and bearing in mind the short time-scale, it has not been possible to organise an event that satisfied all parties in the time available.

“That said, we are not ruling out the possibility that we will look to screen some of England's matches later in the tournament."

The club is hosting corporate events around the three England group games.

that's a shame... does anyone know why the chantry park event was cancelled?

BerlinBlue -

Police had it cancelled due to intelligence suggesting lots of trouble if it goes ahead. Couple this with a lot of unhappy local residents, a lot of unhappy pubs and clubs in the town etc and it was bound to be cancelled.

I think having it in a location like chantry park and the type of venue it would be then it would create trouble etc.

Having it in a stadium is so much easier I would imagine for the police to contain the trouble and deal with anything that comes with it.

So that's another park event cancelled, along with May Day in Alexandra Park and The Strawberry Fair in Cambridge...anybody notice a bit of a trend developing in the organisation of outdoor mirth-for-the-masses events this summer?

May day was not cancelled just had to reduce from 2 main stages to one cos of H+S and insurance issues. I am surprised that the promoters left it so late to get going, anyone with a brain cell knows that to do this sort of event takes months of negotiations. Ispwich Borogh and the club have also missed a trick they should have had raked seating and stuff organised for the practice pitch months ago. Marcus Evans sports events genius - your 'aving a giraffe!

moomoosereni...
thanks for the info... it makes sense i guess... still a pity as it would also have had the potential to have been sth memorable in a positive way. there's nothing like watching footy out in the open in the sun with loads of people. the fan miles over here in berlin in 2006 were something else.

It's bloody criminal that we can't get a decent big screen event on, it would be the next best thing to actually being there. I think there's more than meets the eye as to why this event was cancelled, I hear there were big name acts confirmed and these things take time, so you'd assume the police knew about this months ago, inded they must have to have carried out the so called 'intelligence' (police intelligence - now there's irony for you!) that lead to the event being cancelled at the last minute. All the people I spoke to were taking kids along and the nature of the musical acts meant it would have been much more a family event than the hooligan's paradise Suffolk Police would have you believe.

The club have also missed a trick, revenue per game for matches televised at the ground would have been enormous and surely the stadium safety certificate would have covered the necessary 'elf 'n' safety.

Missed opportunities all round.

kesgraveultra:

A little birdie told me that this was organised in too much of a rush and actually gave the local authorities very little time to prepare for it. Add to this that there was probably a big argument on paying for required amounts of security / police to work the event and you have a cancellation on your hands.

I think its a massive shame that we can't have an event like this. Having said that if it's not prepared for properly in the first place by either the organisers or the council, or of course the police then its just going to get cancelled.

I could have called it from when it was first announced!

There is a massive screen in Trafalgar Square here in London, if you feel like bunking the train, I'm sure you'd be very welcome!
