Stewart Delighted to Be Facing Town
Stewart Delighted to Be Facing Town

Former Blue Marcus Stewart says he is delighted that his Exeter side have drawn Town in the first round of the Carling Cup. Stewart, who has announced that the coming season will be his last as a player, was one of the stars of George Burley’s promotion-winning and UEFA-qualifying team at the start of the century.

The 37-year-old, who coaches as well as plays at St James’ Park, said: "I am really glad we have drawn Ipswich because it will be the last time I get to play against them.

"It is a great draw for everyone at the club. It is always nice to get big clubs down to St James' Park and Ipswich are a big club.

"They were in a false position last season, they should be in the top six of the Championship year in, year out and knocking on the door of the Premier League.

"I had my best times as a footballer at Ipswich and it was there that I made my name. It is always exciting coming up against one of your former clubs and whether I am playing or on the sidelines helping out, I will have some kind of influence on the game."

The tie is likely to be played on Tuesday 10th August with another former Blue, local boy Richard Logan, also likely to be in the Grecians side.

Elsewhere, former Town trialist Emilio Izaguirre, who is currently in action at the World Cup with Honduras, is set to join Premier League Wigan from Montagua in his home country.

The left-back or left midfielder was with the Blues during pre-season ahead of the 2008/09 season.

Osman Chávez, one of Izaguirre's Honduran World Cup team-mates, was linked with the Blues last season.

Meanwhile, Town's possible home friendly with Spurs definitely won't take place on August 2nd, the date previously mentioned for the proposed game, even if it goes ahead as the Premier League side have announced a match against Benfica for the following day.

Great use of the phrase "start of the century"... is there an official time limit to when we can start using this term as it just seems proper wrong, but bizarrely correct! I now feel like I need to go and chase a hoop down a cobbled street with a stick and aspire to own a penny farthing! Right best stop writing as I need to get back up the chimney and finish sweeping before the workhouse master sticks pins in my feet!

Went to see the Canaries against Exeter last season - sadly the Budgies won but Marcus Stewart showed his class as both a pro and as a true blue and came off the bench to nod one in! Hope Exeter let him play the whole game for sentimental value, a true professional!

What a legend.

Will always remember how he dragged us back into the 2000 play-off semi against Bolton with his two goals in the first leg; one of them lashed into the top corner from 40 yards. Magic.

An Ipswich Legend.

Never forget watching him miss a chance down the south stand and the away supporters gave him sh1t. We were 2-0 up at the time and I saw him craftily (away from the officials) point to them and show a zero sign and point to himself and show a two sign. They went mental, we all p1ssed ourselfs laughing!!

It's pathetic that we always have to look back at these good old days at Ipswich. However, it does take my mind off the loser manager and crap team we have in the present. Stewart was class though and I hope he plays a part in the game.

Absolute Legend!
Should have played for England after his Premiership season!
He loved a good night out/drink too!
I may go to this now just for the fact of chanting his name again!

Some nice words from an Ipswich legend. One of my mates is an Exeter fan and I've been to see them a few times the last couple of years, he plays in a deeper role for them and he's still a class act. I'll be driving down to the game from Manchester with my Exeter mate, look forward to seeing him get a great reception from our fans.

Thanks Bergholt... thought for a minute I was the only one who'd spotted that bit of creative licence being put to baffling use! and to continue the theme of all the other posters, yup, what a player... Am I right in thinking we was the Prems top marksman that season?
