O'Connor Signs Deal
O'Connor Signs Deal
Friday, 2nd Jul 2010 11:39

Left-back Shane O’Connor has put pen to paper on the new contract which was offered to him at the end of last season. The former Liverpool academy player’s new deal is aimed at keeping him at Portman Road until 2012

The 20-year-old broke into the side late last season having joined the Blues after a trial, signing an initial one-year contract.

Cork-born O’Connor said: “Obviously I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to stay at the club.

“The deal was agreed a while back, but it’s good to put my signature on the contract, get that out of the way and now I’m looking forward to helping the team have a good season.

“I really enjoyed last year and was pleased with the progress I made. Now I’ve got to look to build on that this year."

O'Connor made 11 starts and two sub appearances and captained the reserves during the 2009/10 season in which he also suffered from a knee ligament injury.

Hooray! something positive to take from our pre-season! A good end to a bad week! Lets hope he continues to develop in the way he was progressing towards the end of last season.

Great Signing and very much needed as without David Wright we are very short in the fullback positions, given you have to now consider Delaney a Centre Half. Shane showed a fair bit of promise the few games he got last year and I'm sure there would have been many more if he hadn't got that long term injury. He looks a decent defender and just as importantly for a modern Full back, can also get forward to support the attack. It will be interesting who Keane will be playing on the other side, with Wright (David) and Rosenior both gone, we don't now have a recognised senior Right Back. He'll either have to sign one, ot my favoured option would be to say to Jamie Peters... "OK Jamie, we've moved you around the field for a while now, I want you to take the Right Back berth and make it your own"... The times he's played at Full Back (either side) have in my oipinion been his best games in a Town shirt. He seems better running at players with the ball at his feet, rather than on to through balls and Full Back is always the best position to do that from given you normally have a bit more of a distance between you and the first defender, so can get a head of steam up, more than playing in midfield, where someone's on you in seconds... It will be interesting to see what Roy do0es with that.

Just had a worrying thought , looking at the Norwich city signings just think they will finish above us next season, and don't expect them to be pushing for promotion either!!

shauest 1: If you have been reading the press lately Keane has identified a number of players he wants to sign. Two of which we were apparently in for, but failed to get... if you read the words he used, it appears he isn't being involoved in the early stages of the discussions and we are missing out... is that because our approaches are wrong? if so, that's not down to keane. He's also stated he's been told he must reduce the squad first and lets be honest, whose gonna come in for the players we don't want? They are not wanted by a team that in all honesty struggled last year, so who will wnat them at the wage level they are probably on here? It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation where the egg has gone off and nobody is interested.

He looks a good prospect with good attitude, i wonder could he play left midfield as well as full back he certainly crosses the ball well. If tommy smith is being lined up for the left back position after a good world cup and civelli returns to full fitness the left side may not be such a problem. The right back position is more of a worry with Wright and Rosenior gone, that leaves just jamie Peters i think.
