Town and Newcastle Targeting Romanian Striker
Town and Newcastle Targeting Romanian Striker
Monday, 12th Jul 2010 23:00

Town and newly-promoted Newcastle United have made enquiries regarding Dinamo Bucharest striker Andrei Cristea, according to reports in the Romanian press. The 26-year-old scored 20 goals and recorded seven assists in 38 games in all competitions last season.

Dinamo have put a price of £1.7 million on Cristea, but Newcastle are reportedly set to test their resolve with a bid of £1.25 million.

The Blues are also said to have shown interest in Cristea but with Dinamo preferring to deal with Premier League clubs and their greater financial resources.

A quick frontman, Cristea was born in Bacău and started his career with hometown side FCM Bacău, joining Steaua Bucharest for $1 million in 2004.

Two years later, having failed to establish himself with Steaua as they won two league titles, the 5ft 10½in tall striker joined FC Timişoara, despite interest from French side Sochaux.

A loan spell at Politehnica Iaşi followed in the second half of the 2007/08 season, Cristea’s goals helping save the club from relegation from the top flight.

In May 2008 Cristea signed a five-year deal with his current club. After scoring two goals in eight games, Cristea moved back to Politehnica Iaşi for a second loan spell in January 2009, returning to Dinamo the next summer, having netted seven times in 15 games as they again avoided the drop.

Once back at Dinamo, Cristea established himself in their first team and was the top scorer in the Romanian league during 2009/10 with 16 goals, netting a further four in other competitions.

Cristea has been capped nine times at full level and on 14 occasions by Romania’s U21s, but so far without netting an international goal.

I think this Cristea looks a decent player. OK, you shouldn't buy someone based on a Youtube video (Just look up Priskin's last year at Watford... he looks awesome!) but he looks decent and if he could be got for around £1.4-£2m that's a huge saving on what we were looking to pay for Chopra... lets hope we see some movement out in the next few weeks, so we can actually put bids in for this quality (Perceived) of players!

Sorry to upset you Wickedblue but it was my response to the statement "follow whoever is in charge, whatever position we are in" and the continuing, rather tiresome, argument that somehow some supporters are more "true" than others. The story is about buying a striker but the simple fact is Keane has blown the cash. Whether Evans has any more, or is prepared to spend any more, we don't know as he is a shady overseas based businessman who refuses to be answerable to us. Are we not allowed to express this opinion?

Forget it, paper talk, we don't have that sort of cash till we off load someone! Should go for Simoen Jackson of Gillingham 23 and has pace, would be alot cheaper. The Scum are still trying to sigin him. Hate to say it, but I rate Norwich's Manager, think he has an eye for a good player.

At the end of the day ,we have a mediocre team, and a manager who has not proved himself .No money to spend ,unless players are sold [unlikely to raise much if anything that route].Few players available, fewer likely to come to P R .So im resigned to a season of mid table football at best, just hope we can at least win a few games ,if not thrash someone now and again this season , as for Prem , forget it .

dirtydingusmagee: Clegg has confirmed that there IS funds available for the purchase of new players, but we have to reduce the wage bill first, given this what we do/don't get for those that move on is not the issue... it's how much in wages we save... some of those players are reported to be on very good wages, so maybe a couple moving on (for whatever fee) would enable us to get the signings RK wants.

Doesn't look a Bad player but won't happen, want to be proven wrong but while Keane is in charge we have no hope you only need to look at the man in the wrong way and your destined to rot in the reserves.
I would also like to point out Football, forgive me if I am wrong is about entertainment there will be none of that either at PR cause KEANO doesn't like flair or creativity, granted Walters has a lot to admire but a whole team of the like.........

i take your point SiBo ,but what i mean is those players demanding high wages are often happy to kick their heels and do sod all as long as the money is going into their bank , not always easy to move them on ,we have been there before.

dirtydingusmagee: Ah and there's the rub! I've never understood it myself... If I were a profesional footballer, I'd much rather earn a bit less and play every week... wouldn't you? No way I would sit on a big wage if it meant reserve football week in, week out! And we are not talking about these people going to clubs to earn a pittance... it would dtill be fr, far more than the average supporter would earn! Crazy to me... let's hope one or two think that way...
