Kennedy at Town on Friday
Kennedy at Town on Friday
Saturday, 24th Jul 2010 09:52

Cardiff City left-back Mark Kennedy is understood to have been at Portman Road yesterday to talk personal terms and to undergo a medical. As reported last night, Town and the Bluebirds are believed to have agreed a £75,000 fee for the 34-year-old ex-Ireland international.

Kennedy was previously targeted by Roy Keane back in March and prior to that in January. A left-back is very much on Keane’s summer wish-list with Shane O’Connor the only left-footed natural full-back currently at the club.

Kennedy is a player well-known to Keane, the two having played together for the Republic of Ireland, for whom the Dubliner won 34 caps, scoring four goals.

The 5ft 11in tall left-back or winger played youth football at Home Farm where the likes Owen Garvan, Shane Supple and Alan Lee also spent time as youngsters and where Garvan’s father is a coach.

Kennedy’s first English club was Millwall, who he joined in 1992, moving on to Liverpool in 1995 for £1.5 million. After three years at Anfield, during which time he went on loan at QPR, Kennedy signed for Wimbledon for £1.75 million.

A year later he made a switch to Manchester City for £1 million, then after two years at Maine Road Kennedy moved on to Wolves for £2 million.

In 2006 after five years at Molineux, Kennedy joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer, moving on to Cardiff in the summer of 2008, again on a free.

Since his switch to Wales, Kennedy has made 69 starts and seven sub appearances but without scoring.

Meanwhile, academy midfielder Elliot Scotcher has been named on the bench for the Wales U17s for this afternoon’s game against Sweden in Falkenberg.

The match is the last in the friendly tournament with Wales having lost 2-1 to Iceland and drawn 1-1 with Norway. Scotcher won his first two U17 caps in those games, coming on as a sub in the first and starting the second.

Whatever happened to Innocent until proven guilty? Give the man a chance. Keep your criticisms to yourselves, welcome him in, give him a few games to prove himself before we judge him.
If he performs, great. If not, THEN I think it's fair to question the signing.
Assuming he signs on the dotted line, I for one welcome him to Portman Road as I would any other player and wish him all the best. Here's hoping he has the experience and positional sense to counterract any lack of pace.

Good signing, should get a good couple of seasons out of him and hopefully he can pass some of his experience on to the youngsters

Decent signing for that price. Has had a decent career and helped Cardiff to the playoff final. I was always a fan of his when he was a Liverpool so i'll be pleased to see him in a Town shirt. Think he'll be perfect to pass his experience on to O'conner and Peters.

Well, as a lot of people have said, he should be OK and could provide cover, although I bet a lot of the same people justified selling D Wright by saying they thought he was just OK and that we needed someone to take us to the next level. But of course, it was clearly personal with Wright, whereas Kennedy is a mate.

The impact of a seasoned pro on our youngsters should not be underestimated. Unlike the people he replaces he has played at the top level and yes he is older and probably in decline... but it is a greater height from which he declines than the "old" people he is replacing.

This is ridiculous!, ITFC exists to help out middling-to-rubbish irish players. Play some local players for God's sake! Where has my once proud team gone.

The anti Keane brigade are up to their old tricks again I see...

Good signing, not spectacular but he is solid and you know what you're going to get with Mark Kennedy. Similar to David Wright in many ways, except he likes to get forward a bit more though and has never been injury prone either. That's all you need at this level. Remind the idiots that moan about this signing that Ashley Cole and Maicon do not want to play in the Championship!

Andyitfc- You dont rate O'Connor? The lad has massive potential...at time last year he was the only attacking minded player on the park. Sorry do not agree with your dumb rating system!

Of course radio there is no local football and ITFC has to play dodgy irish players - cus like ireland is so good at football. Keane has no scouting system - so we're b ggered and that's about it really.

Hope he is as good as Mowbray was at the end of his career. Oconnor as cover for him and Luciano is ok by me.

Free transfer 2006 , free transfer 2008 , £75,000 2010. He must have improved with age !!!!!
We are just trading average players for average players.
Better than David Wright ? Similar wages ?

A very disappointing signing - a 34 year old journeyman who has only gone to left back because he has no pace for the midfield position. The only plus point is that he has a left foot and if needed could move into midfield although as I said no pace whatsoever. Not enthused at all but have to back the judgement of the Manager.

How is paying 75k for a player who is 34, not commanded a fee for nearly a decade, not a full back by trade, he's been converted as his pace had gone, better than keeping david wright, who can play right or left back, is four years youger(might be more) and was one of our better players last year?
This seems to me like a downgrade to last seasons squad
