Hutchings Impressed With Squad
Hutchings Impressed With Squad
Tuesday, 18th Jan 2011 16:27

New assistant manager Chris Hutchings says he has been impressed with the Town squad during his first two days working with them at Playford Road. Paul Jewell’s former Bradford, Wigan and Derby assistant was confirmed as his number two at Town yesterday.

Hutchings, who was sacked as manager of Walsall earlier this month, told the club site: "There are some good players here, we just need to get the best out of them.

"I've only had a couple of days here, but the players have bought into what we want to do and how we want to play.

"It's a fresh start for the players and it's going to take time to turn things around. It's a big challenge but I'm looking forward to it.

"This is a big football club with a great history and when you look around the place, it has the potential to go a long way."

A good team in my opinion, neither plays a passing or a log ball game; but a combination of both. It totally depends on your opposition as to how you play, and this can be changed throughout the match. A good manager will change tactics during the play as will good players. If we look back at the Arsenal game, Charlie did his homework and played the long ball, but we were also efective down the left; and that's what makes a team win. If you maintain the same old style you lose, and we have just got rid of a manager that did that. Things are looking very good, so stay patient and keep the faith.

Jason0999 - people keep saying there is plenty of time left, yes, there is time left to get points, but that's the very point 'we still have to get them'.
In answer to your question I personally like to see good, entertaining, attacking football - in other words the 'Ipswich Way' of playing the game.
I managed teams successfully at various levels for many, many years and have always believed, and always will, that the best form of defence is attack, but it is a fine art in a Manager getting it right.
At this time my thoughts are that ideally we want both - but points on the board are becoming critical to us right now, therefore winning has, in my opinion, to be the top priority over perhaps entertaining football right now.
A difficult one because time drifts away very quickly between now and the end of the season - and as you know I am not one who believes the club can afford to drop down, to wherever, in order to rebuild.
In fact, I know, it just must not happen.

I wonder who writes these little statements from the coaches and players? They are all rather bland and predictable — I mean he is hardly likely to say the squad are lazy and crap! Agent maybe, or does ITFC have a press officer who writes them for them? I bet they are carefully screened either way…

I agree Lennyboy with the 5 or 6 essential things you say.

h32 - although there has been criticism for agreeing with you - I erm - agree! We have to survive. I don't agree we can drop down a division, nor do I agree that Jewell has 'time'. Time is one thing we do not have. Yet, it's not Jewell's fault when he was appointed. Let's hope he does a good job. Keeping us up then pushing next year would be good. Entertaining football is a must - but not if it's going to cost us points!! Best of luck to Jewell - we must back the team!

Sospiri I don't think RK's statements were screened or amended, most of them were less than positive regarding players, staff, supporters and uncle Tom Cobley and all.

H32 & jas0999 ,when you repeat your statement about ''time'' im not sure what you are suggesting, PJ inherited RK 's crap,it will take as long as it takes now to put right,if we get relegated it wont be PJs doing, are you saying if we dont turn it around in time [a possibility, but i think we will beat drop] Jewell has to go ? surely not.We all want to stay up, some were lead to believe we would be going UP! but you both come across as DEMANDING Jewel keeps us up , thats not really on .

alfromcol - or was it just the interviews where keane slagged everyone off? The Press Officer can't really control those, and Keane clearly had a bit of an anger control problem. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall in the dressing room after a bad home defeat..

Suppose he had to say we have a good squad but I have to say I am not convinced, I don't think this lot have what it takes to climb very far up the table without some new blood, we have no creative midfield, that is a must and let's be honest we are pretty poor up front, I think a creative midfielder and a decent striker are the bare minimum we need and the transfer clock is ticking, we really cannot afford another home defeat on Sat.

let's just hope he's not just saying this because ME won't let them have any more money and it's genuine.

just to make a point about the merits of pass and move style vs the long ball.

you have to judge and act accordingly to the merits of the game. for instance, if we even tried to play arsenal at thier own game (possesion and passing) we would not have beaten them. as chaile said, arsenal have a high defensive line which was exposed with the pace of the front 3 and the long ball. the conditions against leciseter where also perfect for the long ball (roy fluked that one) rk's problem was he had no idea what to do when it didnt work agaisnt some of the bigger stouter defensmen in the leccy league. pass and move for the attractivness, is also very draining. also to make it work you need a good team ethic. against a team employing the offside trap your gonna get caught offside everytime. using wingers is all well and good, unless your coming up against a strong fullback, in which case your gonna get caught on the counter attack (so you need a more central approuch) pinging shots at a strong shot stopper isnt gonna get you any joy either, so in that case you NEED to put in crosses.
bottom line- what im getting at here is in proffesianl football matches, you need a little somthing called "adaptablitly" (somthing that roy and even jim towards the end lacked) and it somthing i hope that jewell and hutchings have. anyways heres to doncaster, welcome back lee and lets get this season back on track

I like the fact that he listens to the players and take into account their thoughts.

I too am hopeful.

He is impressed with the squad, well sunshine I have been watching them all season and I can say I am distinctly unimpressed, do you need someone to remind you of our league position, 20th and right in the proverbial. Amazing.

Surely we can't let Fourth's verse go unsaid.

Is this a new composition Fourth? If so mightily impressive. If not I admire your pluck in getting the poem set out properly with all punctuation and spellings complete.

A wonderful change from the usual ramblings of the thick and dull normally displayed on this comment board.

dirtydingusmagee - has to be said that the reasonably assumed objective in changing the Manager was to save the Club from being relegated - otherwise Keane could have stayed until the end of season, end of contract, and no inherited 'extra' cost for the Club / Marcus Evans.

My post doesn't in anyway suggest a demand that Jewell is obligated to avoid relegation - the point Is that I do NOT agree with the numptys who keep on about the Club having to drop down to rebuild. The Club, and indeed the area, just cannot afford that to happen - therefore Paul Jewell to some extent has to be successful and rebuild along the way. No easy task at all ...... for anyone.

No one wants Paul Jewell / Chris Hutchings to be successful at this Club anymore than I do - but when you balance the task at hand, with the more recent background of both these gentlemen, questions have to be asked if it was the right choice. Again only my opinion, and it's as valid as any other, no more no less. For the clueless - THIS IS NOT MOANING - just stating an opinion and an observation.
This doesn't mean I will do anything other than totally support both Jewell / Hutchings and wish them ultimate success for themselves and of course the Club. At least for a period of time, as indeed was the case for Roy Keane.
Again, time will reveal an end result for us all.
